Cheyenne Jackson

AfterElton Briefs: "That's So Gay" wins big, can macho actors "play gay?", and more!

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • Out actor/singer/Hot 100 favorite Cheyenne Jackson performed on the CBS2 HD TV special Holiday in Bryant Park on Tuesday night, and most of the show was a hot mess. The live tree-lighting ceremony hit a snag when ... the tree didn't light. After a commercial break they tried again, and the tree lit up when the countdown reached "three". Cheyenne sang Silent Night, but was upstaged by the children's choir behind him, who battled microphone feedback. You can see the whole debacle here.
  • ABC News has an article on their website with the title "Can Macho, Non-Metro Actors Play Gay?" The offensive implications in the title alone are enough to make eyes roll out of their sockets and across the floor.
  • A report on Queerty has people talking. It's about the response that out Milk director Gus Van Sant gave when asked about the timing of the film's release: "Actually, he said, he's happy about Milk's post-election timing, because seeing the film will make people 'wise up' to gay civil rights, which will do more than passing 'just one proposition.'" It's that last statement that has ruffled a few feathers.

  • Above you can see a report from Ad Age announcing that the Ad Council's "Award for Creative Excellence" has gone to the makers of the "That's So Gay" public service announcements. The ads have been very effective in showing teenagers how thoughtless that commonly used insult is.
  • And finally, the jury is out in Boy George's trial for false imprisonment. If he's convicted, odds are it'll take more than community service to get him out of this.

Opening night of Liza's new one-woman show appropriately star-studded, bizarre

Mary-Louise Parker: "Streeetch .. and kick!"
(all photos: Getty)

Last night the unsinkable Liza Minnelli opened her new show in New York City, and from the looks of the photo coverage the event was every bit as cuckoobananas as we'd expect.

First, the photo service that we use has the title of the show — Liza's at the Palace — listed as "Liza's at the Palace?!", suggesting a sort of abject amazement at the fact they'd let the old bird in the joint in the first place.

But that's just the beginning: even the pics of the celebrity arrivals are unusually bizarre. Check out more pics of stars talking on their phones, doing calf-stretches, and making stink-faces after the jump!

Cheyenne Jackson on "Lipstick Jungle"

Well color us a tasteful marbling of hurt and thrilled: after posting just last week on the reported canceling of NBC's Lipstick Jungle and mourning that the guest spot of out Broadway hunk Cheyenne Jackson might never see the light of day, they go ahead and run it on Friday without even calling to give us a heads-up. Hmph! Regardless, thanks to the wonders of Hulu we've got both (both!) of Cheyenne's major scenes for you to enjoy.

Above, check out the scene where Bryce (Jackson), a nice-guy massage therapist, meets Victory (Lindsay Price). And after the jump, things get complicated! Jackson's a natural, and here's to hoping we see more of him on the tube.

AfterElton Briefs: Cheyenne finds a "Mormon" tempo, "Candorville" stands up for the gays, and more!

Ridiculously adorable out jazz man Dave Koz plays the 11th Annual GLAAD Tidings Concert (GETTY)

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • Out Broadway badunk-adunk Cheyenne Jackson has revealed that he will be playing the lead in Mormon Musical, a project being workshopped next month by the creators of South Park and Avenue Q. Please tell me there's a number about sacred underpants that really gets to the crotch heart of the issue...
  • Out actor David Hyde Pierce was among the 20,000 or so folks in Los Angeles who marched on Saturday for marriage equality.
  • I find it hard to believe that the man who unleashed Vanity 6 on the world could get high and mighty about anything, least of all the people who kept half of his camptacular acts in business.
Candorville
  • Above, the always provocative Candorville comic tackled religion, race and marriage equality this week (click the link for the full strip). Artist Darrin Bell (who is himself of mixed religious and racial backgrounds) has a long history of supporting gay causes.
  • Australian site SameSame is launching a webseries called Camp Surf that takes five gay men and teaches them how to ride the waves. Cute!

Another gay bites the dust: "Lipstick Jungle" axed

Lipstick Jungle's Matt Lauria

Just when the smoke is starting to clear on the whole Grey’s Anatomy fiasco, gay visibility on TV takes another hit as NBC pulls the plug on Lipstick Jungle.

Having successfully survived the faceoff with the similarly-themed Cashmere Mafia which was axed by ABC last season (and featured a lesbian storyline of its own), Lipstick failed to take off in its sophomore season ... which is too bad because this one had plenty in store for the gays this season. Even though the blink-and-you-may-miss-him gay assistant Roy (Matt Lauria) was somewhat of an afterthought on the show, his absence will still be missed as we lose yet another gay character on TV.

And of course, we also have out actor Cheyenne Jackson's appearance on the show to worry about. Let's hope the net doesn't pull the plug before that one airs.

AfterElton Briefs: The Out Hot 100 cover, gay marriage begins in Connecticut, and more!

One of these things is not like the others

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • The cover for the Out Magazine Hot 100 has been released, and it begs the question "what the hell is Katy Perry doing on there?" She's a straight performer who became famous for singing the smarmy tease "I Kissed A Girl" and the insulting "UR So Gay". Was this the best they could do?
  • Speaking of insulting, some rapper you've never heard of doesn't want your gay money. "“I’ma(sic) go on the record right now with this. Homosexuals are probably not gonna like this album" says Trick Trick. Damn ... and I was so looking forward to shelling out my pink three dollar bills for this masterpiece.
  • You may have heard about the boycott of the California Musical Theater because of its artistic director's contribution to Proposition 8. Now comes word that Scott Eckern, the man at the center of the controversy, has resigned from the theater.

From the Boyzone video "Better"

  • To get rid of the stench of Trick Trick's rap droppings, take a look at the newest music video from Irish boyband Boyzone. It's for the song "Better" and features each of the guys in romantic scenes, but with out singer Stephen Gately steaming up the screen with a male actor playing his love interest. The matter-of-fact way it's treated is wonderfully refreshing.
  • And finally, with the protests over Prop 8 still going strong, there is good news on the gay marriage front. Today was the first day that gay couples could legally marry in Connecticut. Congratulations to all the couples taking that stroll down the aisle!

Wonder Woman Lynda Carter and Perfect Man Cheyenne Jackson

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • What happens when two figures of fantasy collide? The white hot intensity of a thousand suns! Out destined-to-be-superstar Cheyenne Jackson met Wonder Woman herself, Lynda Carter, at Lynda's opening night performance in NYC. The remarkably well-preserved icon will be singing at Feinstein's nightclub through Saturday.
  • Out singer Rufus Wainwright is stripping himself down for his next album. After a few releases with lavish production values, he's looking forward to a more intimate sound for his next release: "The album will just be a solo piano/voice, just sitting in the studio alone and making it about the music".
  • As you've no doubt heard by now (and if you haven't, it's actual "Breaking News" on some sites), Lindsay Lohan's days on Ugly Betty are apparently over. The rumors are flying as to what exactly happened, but with all the editing they're going to have to do, I feel sorry for the chump who has to do the recaps for this site every week. Oh wait....
How could the Connecticut gay marriage decision affect the issue in other states?
  • Above you can see a news video from 365gay.com about the Connecticut gay marriage ruling. It became the third state to legalize marriage, and it helps open the door for still more states to do the same.
  • Here's an interesting article about how the number of heterosexual divorces due to a spouse's coming out has increased dramatically. Just another example of the pain and anguish the closet can cause.

AfterElton Briefs: Alan Cumming gets political, Cheyenne Jackson gets "Brown" and more!

Alan Cumming

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • "Hunky, sexy guy" Cheyenne Jackson continues his hilarious self-spoofing trend in the Legally Brown online series, which seeks to find a replacement for "Piragua Guy" in the Broadway smash In the Heights. (And fellow out theater stars Robin De Jesus and Seth Rudetsky are pretty damn funny as well.)
  • Out actor Alan Cumming penned an essay about how the US political system has split the country into "people who think it's their duty to care about other people, and those who think it's every man for themselves."
  • Here's a photo gallery of the butt-hugging goings-on at this past weekend's UnderGear Model Star 2008 Pageant. If, you know, you're into that kind of thing.
  • Above, from our news sibs at 365Gay: Is the economy forcing gays back into the closet when it comes for job searching?
  • Here's a charming LA Times piece on West Hollywood's "gay museum", which despite its description does not contain the preserved remains of noted homosexuals but instead seeks to shed light on forgotten elements of gay history.

Scoopage! Is Cheyenne Jackson venturing into the "Lipstick Jungle"?

We got a thrilling piece of scoopage in our mailbox today from a lovely reader who shall remain nameless: according to our source, out Broadway hunk-a-dunk Cheyenne Jackson is currently upstate shooting a guest spot for NBC's Ladybusiness Lipstick Jungle, where he will play a love interest for one of the ladies (after the jump, for spoiler's sake).

Now, granted, this could all be an elaborate ruse devised by some insidious Xanadu on Broadway/Lipstick Jungle slashfic group, but we're hoping that it's at least a little bit true.

Earlier this summer we reported that Jungle was going to be getting considerably gayer this season, with an existing character coming out early in the season and another coming out later ... and adding one of the biggest up-and-coming out gay actors around is certainly going to add to their gay cache. Hmmm ... anyone else wondering if Mr. Jackson (if you're nasty) might be involved in either of these gay stories?

Thanks to our tipper! And congrats to NBC, who just pulled what is just about the only trick that would actually get me to tune into this show.

AfterElton Briefs: "Swingtown" heads to Bravo, the "Gossip Girl" guys talk "gayface", and more!

Kevin (Matthew Rhys) parts with one of his dolls in the October 19th episode of Brothers & Sisters

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • In today's non-news, Miley Cyrus has reportedly asked that Disneyland be closed for her big birthday party this weekend, leading some hysterical pubs to announce that she's "leaving the gay community out in the cold", as that is part of Disney Gay Days weekend. Never mind that the gays are scheduled to be at a different park that day or that it's pretty hard to leave anyone "out in the cold" in Southern California.
  • Alan Ball has a few movie ideas in mind once he's got Season 2 of True Blood written: one's a 1930's screwball comedy and another's a feminist horror comedy "with a body count". Hey, why not do both together? He could call it Adam's Ribs!
  • Swingtown, which had its share of fans here, will be heading to Bravo for an exclusive full-series run. The show did get pretty gay-inclusive by the end, and let's face it, what's not to love about some syndicated Tom and Trina Decker?
  • Above, from our sibs at 365Gay.com: A report on the recent deposition of an Episcopal Bishop who tried to split the Church after it appointed its first openly gay Bishop.
  • Now that Xanadu on Broadway has closed (pauses to wipe away tear), out badunka-hunk Cheyenne Jackson is moving on to other projects, including playing the lead in George Bernard Shaw's The Shewing-Up of Blanco Posnet, a wild west melodrama being mounted as a part of The Project Shaw. Let's hope there are chaps involved.
  • Chace Crawford, Ed Westwick and Penn Badgley (all of Gossip Girl) appear on the cover of this month's Details and inside they mourn the media obsession with their sexualities. I may be more inclined to take the discussion seriously were it not sharing front-page space with the headline "Do You Have Douchebag Hair?".
