James Bond

Sounds Like a Hit! video blog ep. 3: "Nine", "gayface", and the lasting power of Bond themes

In this week's installment of the bicoastal bitchfest, hosts Kyle and Brian discuss the glorious production still from Rob Marshall's film production of the Broadway classic, Nine. They also discuss the meaning of "gay face" and wonder whether it's learned or genetic.

Also mentioned this week: The power of the Bond movie pop theme, and why Fergie costs one bottle of Xanax.

Enjoy it all after the break!

Out at the Movies: "Quantum of Solace", "Slumdog Millionaire", "A Christmas Tale"

Daniel Craig and friend in Quantum of Solace

Three terrific new movies open in US theaters this weekend, and while none of them is gay per se, they're all queer-adjacent enough (not to mention that each is just flat-out awesome in its own way) for AfterElton.com readers to check out. Find out more after the break!

Daniel Craig says no same-sex shagging for James Bond

Bad news Bond fans: in an interview posted today on the Guardian film blog, Daniel Craig took some readers' questions about the upcoming Bond movie Quantum of Solace including this one:

Question: Over the years, we've seen Bond shag many beautiful birds along the way. Do you think Bond will ever shag a bloke? (from Paul1970)

Daniel Craig: This is that question that keeps eternally coming up. No. Kill him and then seduce him [laughs] but not seduce him. It's never been on the agenda and we've never had a discussion about it. It's not something that I desire or want. No.

I don't quite follow the "kill him and then seduce him ... but not seduce him" part. Sounds like we're talking about necrophilia. And I don't even mind — much — that this 145th installment of Bond will not include anything gay with James, but I don't get that they've never even had a discussion about it. Really? We are talking a franchise that has done about everything under the sun and needs to stay relevant and fresh, and having Bond have a same-sex romance or encounter never even came up?

As for Craig, clearly when he says it's not something "he wants" he is referring to what he wants for the character of Bond as he's played gay before including in Infamous (pictured below).

Well, I guess we can still hope for a moment to top Craig's strutting from the ocean in the last flick. Or his nude torture scene. Say, how about a nude stroll out of the ocean?

And thanks to AfterElton.com reader Joseph for bringing this to our attention!

The spy who came out of the closet?

I know, I know, any excuse to show Daniel Craig in that James Bond swimsuit, right?

Actually, there is a point, though. According to this article in Time magazine, the real life equivalents of the sexy super spy are now allowed to be openly gay, and in fact, are being actively recruited by the British intelligence agency, MI5.

"For the sort of work that MI5 is doing — not just in operations but in terms of technical support and linguistics — the caliber of people is terribly important to its effectiveness," says Ben Summerskill, chief executive of the gay rights group Stonewall. Sexual preference is a nonissue.
Summerskill has an unusual insight into the recruitment strategy of Britain's intensely secretive domestic intelligence agency. He was contacted "some months ago" by MI5 and asked to help encourage gay men and women to consider careers with the service and set up a network for its existing gay and lesbian employees."

Back in the "old days", gays were barred from serving openly because of the "they might be blackmailed" eye-roller, but times have changed, and according to one senior source, they're just trying to get the best people for the job:

"All we're doing is making sure as a prospective employer we're spreading our net as wide as possible to attract the best possible candidates who fully represent the diversity of U.K. society."

Actually, the most fascinating part of the article is when it goes into the lengths that closeted gays went to when it was still considered a crime:

"Until gay sex was decriminalized in 1967, Britain's gay community protected itself against potential prosecution by conducting conversations in a special argot, Polari, a mixture of Italian, Romany and London slang."

That's heartbreaking. I had my own language growing up, but it was just between me and my imaginary friend (and I ended the friendship because he wouldn't teach me any more swear words), but I can't imagine going through life believing you have to speak in code in order to live honestly.

Well, If I were British, I'd certainly apply. I can see myself jetsetting around the world, with a license to be a "manizer", and as I'm sitting in a cocktail lounge with a glass of Yoo-Hoo (shaken, not stirred), being approached by a very attractive swarthy man who says "Hello, my name is Peter Galore".

"Will gay for Oscar": Daniel Craig's former co-star thinks Bond would bend for the gold

Remember that rumour going around last year that Daniel Craig wanted a gay love scene in the next Bond movie? We covered it HERE (and check out the scintillating comments). Well, a former co-star of his is now saying that Daniel would be willing to do the scene, in exchange for an Academy Award.

Tamer Hassan, Daniel's co-star in the action drama Layer Cake, was recently quoted in an interview, claiming, "That's Daniel dying for an Oscar. Ever since Brokeback Mountain everyone wants to have a gay scene to win an Oscar".

Yes, because we all remember the triumphant moment when both Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhall strutted on stage to accept their awards back in 2005.

The memory-challenged Hassan also is adamant about never stooping to that level:

"You couldn't get me doing that though - my son would never forgive me! I've got a 16-year-old son, so can you imagine? He would get ridiculed for it. And he's at a professional soccer club too - can you imagine the dressing room banter?! So, no, they couldn't get me doing that. They can keep the Oscar and I'll keep my virginity!"

Yes, the children...won't someone please think of the children!

Seeing how Daniel has played gay before, and remains Oscar-less, I highly doubt he would think a gay Bond scene would bring him the gold. Besides, if any Bond scene should win him an award, it would be this one (you know the scene i'm talking about).

AfterElton.com Readers' Choice: What are the Best Male Movie Costumes?

Yesterday, we looked at a survey of the best film costumes of all time, a list that lacked any iconic men's costumes (as Gwen noted in the comments). Now to some degree, that could be seen as an example of how women's fashion allows for more experimentation, but there are a number of male film costumes that have had an impact on our culture and it seems a shame not to give them credit.

Thus, here are a few suggestions for men's movie costumes that deserve a place among the greatest film costumes of all time, and a poll inviting you to cast your vote for the best. Some of them are from recent films (though nothing as recent as Keira Knightley's Atonement dress) while some are images that have stood the test of time, but they're all memorable.

Tell us what you think of these suggestions in the poll that follows!

Jack Twist's shirt
From: Brokeback Mountain

Jack's shirt is the cornerstone of Brokeback's touching, closing scene where Ennis discovers his dead love's clothing intertwined with his. That reminder of lost love was a powerful image and when the shirts were put up for sale they pulled in over $100,000. The buyer, actor and activist Tom Gregory, called them "The Ruby Slippers of our time" (referring, of course, to the iconic costume pices from The Wizard of Oz) and swore to keep the shirts together, as they appeared in the film.

James Dean's Jacket
From: Rebel Without A Cause

James Dean showed have quite a bit of media savvy in one popular story about Rebel without a Cause. The story claims that Dean's character, Jimmy Stark, was originally supposed to wear a leather jacket but when Dean learned the film would be in color, he suggested his character wear something more colorful. The red, nylon jacket Dean wore became an iconic image for the classic film and for Dean himself. Rebel also featured an unrequited homoerotic relationship between Stark and Sal Mineo's Plato, with the red jacket playing a role in their relationship's final moment.

Daniel Craig's squarecut trunks
From: Casino Royale

One image key to marketing of the prior Bond film, Die Another Day, was the image of Halle Berry stepping out of the water in a bikini. With the arrival of Craig's Bond, however, we got a change in how Bond was marketed to audiences: this time it was Bond walking out of the surf looking sexy in a swimsuit. The movie poster showed Craig in Bond's traditional tuxedo, but Craig's buff body in revealing swimwear was the image we most frequently saw when the media discussed the film. It was the first time Bond's barely-clad body (as opposed to that of a "Bond girl") was the film's most lasting imagery.
