Tony Award Nominee Jonathan Groff has Most Low-key Coming Out Ever.

Broadway.com reported last week that "Spring Awakening heartthrob Jonathan Groff, reunited with the cast of Hair, took the day’s opportunity to tell Broadway.com he is gay and proud."

Gavin Creel and Groff at the Equality March on Washington

Boy, talk about follow up questions begging to be asked! But that was all Broadway.com had to say about the topic.

Entertainment Weekly recently reported that Groff is going to be guest-starring on Glee for five or six episodes.  EW also reported that Groff will be a potential love interest for Rachel (Lea Michele). That means Groff would be yet another out actor playing a heterosexual love interest. Groff also made AfterElton.com's recent 37 Hottest Guys in Theater list.

I haven't yet been able to independently confirm Groff's coming out, but have no reason to doubt Broadway.com.

Here are some recent pics of Jonathan! (And thanks to AE reader AlanStuartJones for the tip!)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they play the same role in "Hair" -- Groff in the Park version and Creel in the Broadway version?
jsg03jd's picture

You're correct.

Groff played Claude at the Delacorte but dropped out before the Broadway transfer, and Creel took over and is still playing Claude at the Al Hirschfeld Theater.

Groff's coming out isn't really any surprise, so it's fine that it's low-key.  Dude is always with Lea Michele though everywhere that girl goes, and now they're both going to be in GLEE.  With Jenna Ushkowitz, it's a freaking SPRING AWAKENING reunion on GLEE starting in 2010...

Yay!

Yay! Score another one for our side! He is a HUNK and a great talent. Hope to be seeing more of him in the future!

I heard he and Gavin Creel are dating?

Is it true?
jsg03jd's picture

Where'd you hear that?

Hard to tell from the pics as they may just be close friends, but maybe.  I don't remember the last time there was an out gay Broadway power couple.  Maybe it could be Groff/Creel.

I could be totally wrong

I think someone mentioned it on Jonathan Groff`s IMDb board. He/she didn`t give any link or something though.

I just checked out Gavin Creel`s twitter page and he actually mentioned JG a few days ago. Nothing special though, just a picture of him & Lea.

Maybe they`re just friends.

It's hardly confirmation,

it may just be wishful thinking but the pictures and message re Groff/Creel are cute and clearly well-meaning:

Creel-Groff

I read something about this on Broadwayworld but I think it was just fan chatter.

Behind the scenes

Is Groff single? If so, then hands up who wants to hear reports from backstage about Groff getting rather pally with our dear little Chris Colfer?

More incentive to rent "Taking Woodstock"!

I saw it in the theater and despite its flaws enjoyed it immensely.  Jonathan Groff has a small but pivotal role, and his look is 60's-hippie-sex-on-a-stick--a big mop of curly hair, leather vest over no shirt, and jeans.  Oh, and an angelic face creased with a devilishly sensual grin.

So he can sing, dance, act, is a looker, politically active, AND out?  Ladies and gents, I think we have the second coming of Neil Patrick Harris here.

All you folks who put off seeing "Taking Woodstock," be sure to pick it up!

Jonathan Groff is great! Here he is from OLTL

I think he's gonna just continue to grow and be a huge star.

This is from 2007...he's Henry

He was suppose to be a high school shooter but then the Virginia Tech shootings happened and they killed the story.

Hey! they should bring him back as a love interest for one of the Landview gays. Yes, I read they killed the character in a car but maybe he was driving through Oakdale.

Broadway coming out stories

It's always weird when we're dealing with gay people who perform mostly on Broadway or the Brittish stage because a lot of them are out, but because they're only on Broadway the mainstream media doesn't cover them, so people like Groff, Creel, Cheyenne Jackson, (I could go on and on) were out a long time before it hit the press.  And the specifically Broadway media (Playbill, Broadwayworld, Broadway.com etc...) are often strangely reticent about talking about the gayness of the people they cover unless those people push it forward.

Exactly

ITA. I knew about Jonathan Groff like a year ago. Same with Creel. The mainstream media doesn't really talk about theater actors all that much unless they have been in alot of other things as well. But their are alot of gay actors on Broadway. I don't think that's much of a secret.

Goff is quite yummy in "Taking Woodstock"

He and Gavin Creel would make a nice couple.

I have to say...

Jonathan Groff is one of the coolest people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. In 2008 I went on a trip with my school to NYC. One night, we were walking by the theatre where Spring Awakening was performing, and I, being a big fan of the musical, noticed him outside signing autographs at the stage door. It was pretty late, and he was the last one their. So me, the other group we were with (a theatre group), and one of our chaperones went over to say hi. He was super friendly. He even took us inside the theatre, backstage a bit, and onstage. Standing on the stage of a broadway theatre was the coolest thing in the world, haha. We didn't even see the show, so he just did this out of kindness. Everyone was so excited; it made our night.

So yeah, Jonathan Groff kicks some serious ass. I can't wait to see him on Glee!

being out in the b-way world

I have to say, Im not surprised.  I've worked in theatre for a while and from leads to the swings, its the straight guys who have to come out as liking women, not the boys about liking boys.

I've been a fan of Afterelton.com for a few years now, and having seen the HOT100, and the HOT37, there are so many more men that are amazingly hot, out, proud, talented, smart and in committed relationships, I feel like those are the people that need to be highlighted, in addition to celebrities, these are the stand-up men that entertain the masses, not just those that can afford a $100 ticket to a b-way show.

On a side note, i worked at a theater where the Groff was a lead during the prior season.  Most of the staff liked him well enough, except for the fact that he missed the power note in the main song almost every night.  Whereas the male ensemble in the same show (8 gays, 1 straight) kicked the major ass.

:-) just wanted to add a little perspective...

Broadway ''coming out''

I just have to add a comment to DB's ''Broadway coming-out stories'': A number of gay actors on Broadway are ''out'' to their friends, family and theater colleagues, but that doesn't mean they are ''out'' to the press, or for the record. Cheyenne Jackson is one of the rare leading men who came out at Playbill.com just as he was getting attention in 2004. This was before he got his big break in ''All Shook Up.'' Gavin Creel didn't officiallly come out to the press until this spring, right before he went into ''Hair'' on Broadway. Everyone has his own timetable, but I'm glad he's out now and working on Broadway Impact.

Out to the press

But, let's be honest, most of these guys aren't "out to the press" because the press doesn't care.
