I don't know if it is easier to show two women because of the perceived notion that men would "go at it", more so than women. I think that has very little to do with it.

I am not straight, so I don't pretend to know how straight guys think but I can be a more objective observer. These taboos and archetypes of gay love are created for and perpetuated by straights, let's not forget.

In the 1970s most explicit sex was relegated to porn, The ratings by todays standards were pretty much G or X with not too many shades between. Even at that I think is was surprising the amount of bisexual or homoerotic content in much of the main stream straight male porn. I am thinking of magazines like Rooster, and others that routinely showed men. Since then the range of sexual persona for men seems to have narrowed considerably. What was once perceived as an erotic act (a man screwing a woman) now has homosexual overtones, strangely enough.

And while many straight men say they prefer lesbian porn, because there are no men in it, I think there is a much more basic desire at play. The fact that these woman don't need a man, that in effect they have a metaphorical penis. At one level it represents woman as a man, or woman adopting the persona of a man. Not only are the women allowed to make it go slowly, as you point out, but they also represent women as a top, or dominant sexual partner. It is a way for a straight man to role reverse. Where perhaps the lesbian represents some of the stereotypes placed on straight men, namely aggression and raw sexual appetite.

And we can't deny the dominant role that men play in society, where certain attributes are called masculine and encouraged and considered superior while feminine attributes are shunned and mocked.

Gay male relationships have a similar effect in shows like ATWT and slasher fiction. Where the gay couple of adoration is emasculated, the metaphorical penis cut off. What could be more obvious with the eunuchs Luke and Noah? It is a way for a straight woman to role reverse. Where perhaps the gay male represents some of the stereotypes placed on straight women, namely passivity and romance. These gay couples are safe and non threatening and easily dominated.

For the same reason that lesbians are more attractive for having grown a metaphorical penis, the slasher couple is looked down on for having lost theirs. It is this base stereotype of gay sexuality that I find so damaging in the story that P&G has decided to exploit.
