What the heck happened with the "lesbians" on Grey's Anatomy? EPISODE SPOILERThis is a subject that I should probably go check out on AfterEllen.com, to see how our sisters felt about it, but I am not sure if anyone who saw the show was as disappointed in the tid-bit that we were fed about Callie and Hahn towards the end of this episode? Neither of them are lesbians? WTF? I can understand the show going with the Callie character never having found herself attracted to a woman before as it does happen and can open dramatic avenues, but to make Hahn be in EXACTLY the same boat? Yawn. Why not explore Hahn as at least a closeted lesbian so that we can have something that can touch both of the fluidity of sex (esp. with women) and the more common perspective about most of us having a defined sexual orientation from very early on. My disappointment comes from the fact that there are such few gay characters of magnitude on TV and that this might lend itself to a "lesbians until graduation" angle and/or do little more than give homophobes talking points about what can happen when all this gay stuff is allowed to breathe. The gay agenda at work ;-) Soon we'll turn everyone gay..... Ultimately it's all about the emotional week to week execution and not ideology, so maybe this stuff is not relevant and we should take a wait and see attitude with the women and the show itself, but I am not liking the framing of this at all. Also, If I had to rate the 2-hour episode as a whole, I'd give it a D at best as it all rang so false to me. Last season, the show's creator realized that her show had lost its way and the writers strike allowed her to come back with an amazing batch of post-strike episodes written after she took the time to re-watch every single episode the show from its pilot on. I think few here will forget the Don't Ask Don't Tell episode last season to show how great this show can be when it mines emotions and humor. Could she have lost here way again so quickly? At least Yang may have met a worthy male so all is not lost.... http://springintoaction.typepad.com/

agree about Grey's
I couldn't believe what I was hearing at the end of this show. It seemed to me that the show totally chickened out and back tracked the whole thing with these two women. This story was what got me interested in Grey's last season because I have never really been into this show. Medical shows usually don't do it for me (I've had too much real life medical drama). But I thought this show had gotten the guts to do a great story with these two women who are both interesting actors. But between the wimp that they've made George and now this, I probably won't bother to get into this show this season.
I say we take the warning labels off everything and let nature take it's course.
It seems a little
It's not that....
....it's impossible for two previously primarily straight women to get together. That I could believe. But, that is not how I saw the story being portrayed. It seemed that Hahn was a lesbian that was seducing Callie and that Callie was the one with more "fluid" sexuality, that was increasingly attracted to Hahn. That was how I saw it. Now they have back tracked that and are saying they both were "trying it out".That seems like a chicken-out.
I say we take the warning labels off everything and let nature take it's course.
That is exactly how I saw it and it seems that it .....
I hope that Creator Shonda Rhimes has something up her sleeve and that her "me too" response might just mean that Hahn not ready to be fully candid with Callie. I read somewhere that Rhimes was doing some due diligence with her story arc for these two with several gay groups, but that guarantees nothing as she may have been looking getting them on board with a story that is indeed "possible" but not the most fertile nor common. While more appropriate for our sister-site, I was shocked....
to read today that....
POTENTIAL GREY'S ANATOMY SPOILER
......
Dr. Erika Hahn will be exiting the show in this week's episode under pressure from ABC. The firing of a perfectly cool character who was not even a regular until the public so liked her ballsy approach that she was made into one, now gets the shaft because apparently some at ABC they were not "feeling it" between their two newly-minted lesbian characters.
I've been critical of the execution of the storyline and have been chatting with some of the women on AfterEllen to get their take on it. It was interesting to hear different perspectives on it, but even I never expected to either character shown the door because of a story that may not be working. What kind of message does that send, esp. after they made such a big deal out of it and even approached GLAAD to get feedback on what they were planning to do.
When fans were not into the George and Izzie pairing, they just moved on. Brooke Smith is being treated as if she had behaved like Isaiah Washington as the end result is just the same.
I hope that GLAAD speaks out ASAP and suggest that those of you who watch the show and feel jipped by what has happened join our lesbian and bisexual sisters at AfterEllen who are being quite active in letting ABC know how they feel. They've also de-lesbianized, then de-bisexualized a female character who is waiting the wings on the same show. At this rate, next year's GLAAD report might be down to just the cartoon characters who are allegedly GLTB. And we are talking about ABC, which was given the highest grade by GLAAD as their competitors had nothing to even put out there for the most part. One step forward, 100 steps back. As of a few hours ago even Grey's creator has tried to put a positive spin on what was first described as exclusively an ABC mandate.

Good comparison between Brooke Smith and Isaiah Washington
Washington made more than one homophobic remark and was hard to work with, while Smith was a professional who was loved by her costars and had faith in the storyline pitched by her executive producer and hyped by ABC.
With the news coming from California today, it appears that it's not only TV portrayals of gays that has a long way to go. So today's scorecard reads as follows: Gays don't deserve the same rights as heterosexuals either on TV or in life.
This is very common
the problem is that they have now two lesbian characters, and if they have to find a new girlfriend to Callie they will have three lesbian characters, and it's too much gay for a show (and even they have the barely there Joe) (this is ironic).
In fact is an usual complaint of no so much homophobic straight viewers (in fact i have a couple of friends of this kind) when a show become too gay, it seems people tolerates (or even like) a gay couple, but more gay characters became too much for them
It would not be so hard to break them up and.....
The problem that I continue to have with Callie since writer's pen turned her into a lesbian, is that none of her actions make it seem like she likes women sexually and certainly not emotionally. AfterEllen has been following this up with a vengeance.
And if anyone wants to read GLAAD's "response" to this central character being given the boot, check out their website. I am not linking it as I find it a total waste of effort and indicative that the group needs to better focus its resources. The mainstream media and the show's viewers has been more critical of Grey's than anything GLAAD has said.
