Matthew Mitcham signs with Grand Slam Sports

Sydney, September 19: Grand Slam International (GSI) today announced that Olympic diving champion Matthew Mitcham has appointed Grand Slam International (GSI) for exclusive management and marketing representation.

At the recent 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Matthew performed the single greatest dive in Olympic history to become the first Australian male to win an Olympic gold medal in diving since Dick Eve at the 1924 Summer Olympics.

In what was a remarkable 10m platform final, Matthew entered the final round of dives in second place, 34 points behind Chinese diver Zhou Luxin. An extremely difficult assignment, Matthew needed to score 107.30

to claim gold. Matthew lined up for his final dive and performed it with precision, scoring four perfect ten's from the judges to achieve a score of 112.10, the highest single-dive score in Olympic history. Matthew's win prevented China from claiming a clean-sweep of all diving gold medals at the 2008 Olympic Games.

Matthew joins an outstanding group of stars at Grand Slam International including Olympians Ian Thorpe, Leisel Jones, Alisa Camplin, Torah Bright and Steve Hooker, NASCAR driver Marcos Ambrose, Tour de France star Cadel Evans and Socceroo John Aloisi.

Grand Slam International managing director David Flaskas said he was delighted to have Matthew Mitcham as part of the Grand Slam International team.

"Matthew is an outstanding young athlete whose performance in Beijing was breathtaking. He acted with great modesty and sportsmanship in light of his success and that has endeared him to all Australians," Flaskas said.

"We very much look forward to supporting Matthew. He has further ambitions in his sporting career including the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 2012 London Olympics."

Matthew is excited about the opportunity to join with Grand Slam International.

"Winning gold in Beijing was an amazing experience for me. I've been overwhelmed with the public's response to my achievement and am looking forward to the road ahead," Matthew said.

"Grand Slam International represents many of Australia's leading sports stars, helping them successfully manage their careers both in and out of the athletic arena. I look forward to working with GSI on some exciting initiatives."

Grand Slam, not AussieBum?

I had read elsewhere that he signed with AussieBum. Does Grand Slam make AussieBum, or was the earlier report a false rumor?

No, not "distant gay traces" -- it's distingué traces!

Grand Slam is a management/marketing firm

...while aussieBum is a manufacturer of swimwear.

It's probably been in the works since before the Olympics, but has anyone else noticed that Kylie Minogue's latest video, "The One," features a boy in a speedo against a Busby Berkeley-style backdrop that is reminiscent of a closing ceremony at what might be the Gay Olympics?  Is it possible this is, in part, a tribute to Matthew?  After all, Kylie is from Downunder too.

Whoever he is, he's quite beautiful.  But the fact remains that he looks more like a swimmer than a dancer in the video (it says on his resume that, in addition to being a dancer, he also a swimmer and gymnist).  I doubt I'm the only person on the planet to have noticed this.
