Thanks for posting this, I'm a Bollywood junkie. Ever since the first time I saw Akshay Kumar play a rip off of the briefs scene from Risky Business. While Bollywood is stuck in the 50s in a lot of attitudes, the dance numbers are incredible. You'd never see an American action hero cavort like the Hindi ones do. And many of the leads are hot even by European standards. Partly since they seem to get more Western looking by the year. But that's someting for another post.
Despite his open minded talk he gives me the impression that he is not out to himself despite the fact (or because of the fact?) that all of India thinks he is gay anyway. Though, I don't fault him for coming out. Despite the fact that most people consider him fey, I do think it would have a negative influence on his movies. Particularly since he already has a lot of haters for his style of making movies.

Funny that you should mention Akshay. He is the one who has had same sex rumors (or rather "both sides of the aisle" rumors) around him for the longest I think.
From what I understand Karan Johar movies always made a lot of money overseas (namely in the UK and US market), probably because of the high production values. His first bunch of movies also made a ton of money locally, in India, but from what I understand his latest movie KANK could only be considered a success because of the money it made in the US/UK, while the Indian audience was rather ambivalent because they disliked the contents of the movie (two people who are already married to others meet, fall in love, get found out and kicked out by their partners and end up together).
If IMDB is correct Kal Ho Na Ho came out in 2003, while his talk show Koffee With Karan came out in 2004. And Koffee With Karan is what really brought his personality more to the forefront.
Of course there is no way of knowing how popular or unpopular he is in India, I just notice that whenever I go to some of the more India based websites or message boards (as opposed to websites maintained by or targeted at Western fans of Bollywood) you usually don't have to look far to find a lot of vitriol targeted at him. Sort of the high class critique is that he is all glitz and no subtance, all glamour and no talent, while the low class critique is that is "so gay".
And his talk show has certainly raised his profile at home. My Indian coworkers, have mentioned Manish as the other well known "gay" in India. But then follow on, very quietly, that Karan has been linked with King Kahn himself. Then they insist that Karan will marry, possibly Rani Mukerjee. Like I said, very 1950s Hollywood. Complete with Gay leading men leading double lives, endless gossip, and open secrets for those in the "Film Fraternity," to use a favorite Karan phrase. For example, speaking of open secrets, I've never seen it mentioned but its pretty obvious that Salman Khan wears a toupe. All that aside, some of the men are outstanding dancers, such as Hrithek Roshan, and Shahid Kapur. The dance numbers can be quite erotic, even though India is still very homophobic. Again reminescent of the 50s in the US.
OMG, this looks sooooo hot!
Incredibly silly, but John Abraham coming out of the water could rival Daniel Craig's scene in Casino Royale!

By Bollywood standards, Karan Johor is practically out...

karan johar has haters in india..hmm..thts suprising considering the amounts of money all the films he has directed or even produced have roped in.

If he really is with Manish more power to him.
Karan is big with the NRIs for the style of his films
