Mambo Italiano is a super cute Canadian comedy. I would have also liked to see Hong Kong's Happy Together, Mexico's El cielo dividido and Spain's Cachorro. I am so happy C.R.A.Z.Y. made it! Markie27 (996 points) (267 posts) on Mon, 2008-09-08 01:12.although only two of my top 5 made the top 10 (brokeback - ofcourse, and shelter) i have to say that the top 10 are very remarkable if not groundbreaking films.... i love all of them... but i can't believe that ANGELS IN AMERICA was eligible.... i would have included it in my top 5.. even my number 1 pick.... that t.v. mini-series is close to perfection.. a true classic. oh well.. if it is eligible i would definitely include that in my list next year. and i agree with the above comment (though not in my top 5) - Mambo Italiano is an endearing film. i'm sad that "it's My Party" didn't make it though... must be because it's a very somber film (it's the only film in my top 5 not included in the final 50) i hope people would watch "gone, but not forgotten".... low budget but beautiful film... not a classic... but worth checking out. not happy about "my beautiful laundrette" - never liked that film. and i am sooo happy "to wong foo" made it so high - it's one of my guilty pleasures -it may not help our cause but it surely made it colorful! but all in all these are wonderful choices!!! goes to show that AE readers and friends are truly sophisticated and intelligent. :-) NEXT YEAR - MILK!!!!!!!! ALL the lead characters got laid in the end! On camera! Happy endings, how sexy. It may be really really dumb, but wow I found it radical... Along with "A Love to Hide," the most egregious omission is surely "Wild Reeds"--one the most heartbreakingly beautiful coming-of-age films--in any genre--ever made. I would never presume to criticize anyone else's favorites, but a good number of these go "gobble" at Thanksgiving.

I saw it mostly as a pastiche of 'Cabaret' and 'Bent' (with a tiny bit of 'Sophie's Choice' thrown in for good measure). At one point, there is a character who is written to perform nearly the exact same symbolic gesture that appeared in 'Bent'. The father's ultimate character resolution seemed very contrived and written to specifically make the viewers cry. It lost a lot of points (IMO) for its lack of original storyline. I'm glad to see more of the lesser known films, especially the foriegn films mentioned in this blog. (Even some didn't make the list at all). I'm glad I found out about 'Beautiful Thing' through word of mouth. I'd hate to have missed that one simply because it didn't get the 'Hollywood' treatment. I'm also glad to see movies like 'Brokeback...' and 'Philadelphia' made it. Too many of the movies that made this list are just 'fluff' and lack decent acting, interesting cinemetography or any depth of plot. I love gay-themed movies and I wish there were more well-made options to choose from. Joseph (7150 points) (1457 posts) on Tue, 2008-09-09 09:36.I can't comment about the ultimate similarities between Bent and A Love to Hide because after 30 minutes of watching Bent, I was sooooooo unbelievably bored out of my mind that I stopped watching. That didn't happen with A Love to Hide, where I was hooked within the first 5 minutes and it held me until the end. And, um, sorry, I don't really see the similarity to either Cabaret or Sophie's Choice, for that matter! Other than the historical topic being the same...which would mean A Love to Hide also borrows from other films such as Stalag 17, Von Ryan's Express, Army of Shadows, Life is Beautiful.... But you're right that most of the movies on the list aren't all that great. Part of the problem, I suspect, is that many people probably aren't familiar with the great foreign gay films or the documentaries, many of which are vastly superior to films that ranked pretty high. And I doubt he's through with the genre. He's always been open to playing a wide range of roles, from messiahs to alien invaders. You will LOVE him in "My Own Private Idaho" (MOPI for short).
I've seen about 15 of the movies
But one that missed this list is And the Band Played On. It captures exactly what happened when AIDS was first discovered and how it affected many of us.
Another movie that I thouroughly enjoyed was De-Lovely with Kevin Kline and Ashley Simpson.
The most glaring omission is Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil with Kevin Spacey. A classic.

Honestly, I thought that the acting in Shelter was good. In my opinion Trever Wright (sp?) was pitch perfect as Zach and I also enjoyed Tina Holmes as Jenne, Zach's sister.

"Shelter" was no. 3, not 2! In a few years, after "Shelter" is long forgotten, "Beautiful Thing" will still soar. "Brokeback Mountain" is a film that transcends categories and belongs, as I believe our editors said, at the top of any "best of" list. But "Beautiful Thing" is unapologetically gay, and utterly, well, beautiful. Word to the powers that be: I'm still waiting for the sequel!

Shelter (Totally fell for this movie - a gay love story with a great ending)
Philadelphia (An important movie and one of Tom Hanks' best performances.)

Brokeback Mountain (Raw, emotional, & honest - a tour de force)

I guess I'll have to stop referring to Night Of The Living Dead as a "zombie movie" (no zombies in the cast or crew), or to Superman, Batman and Spider-Man films as "superhero movies," since I haven't heard of any real superheroes working on them. And obviously nobody will be allowed to refer to any John Hughes pictures as "teen movies."
A movie about straight people that was written by, directed by, produced by and starried gay folks would not be considered a "gay movie," at least not by me. This is along the lines of the faulty semantic reasoning that homophobes try to use to object to being labeled a homophobe, saying they arent afraid of gays.
Those Who Love Me Can Take The Train is a terrific film.

Hell, it's not a movie at all the way some of you go on about it. It's the Second Coming of Christ.
To me the slavering fealty so many gays give to this four-hankie tearjerker is inidicative to just how deeply internalized homophobia runs. There are any number of films on this survey list that deal with real pride and the resolve to fight back. Beautiful Thing alone has more guts and glory. Yet THIS is Number one!

Sorry, David, but you're overreacting. Most people my age identify with "Brokeback Mountain" so strongly because it is OUR story. We didn't grow up with AfterElton and Aussiebum. The closest thing we had to a role model was Liberace. Sex was something dirty and hidden and shameful. When I ache for Ennis and Jack, I'm aching for myself, and the thousands like me, who never understood that coming out was even an option. I know you want to shock, but you're never going to take BBM away from the rest of us. It's not "slavering fealty"--it's love, pure and simple.

Seriously, the first time I saw Brokeback I was appalled. For me, the tent scene was rape and from there on, it was just a sick, twisted and destructive series of encounters. A great romance? Not even close.
Give me Shelter or Beautiful Thing instead.

I finally saw Les chansons d'amour
Saw it about a week or so ago, and while I don't share everybody's enthusiasm for the film, I can say that once the annoying blonde girlfriend--god, I hated her--leaves the proceedings and Grégoire LePrince-Ringuet enters, the film picks up considerably, leading to a very sweet and satisfying ending.
Plus Jérémie Renier's adorable brother Yannick has a small part!

I need to watch this movie again. But you're certainly right about Gregoire. He makes a delightful stalker! Overall, I enjoyed the film, but I don't really see the necessity of everyone singing. The first thirty minutes, especially, left me cold. What I did like is the idea that Louis Garrel's character, who we had no reason to believe was gay, suddenly reponds romantically to a man. He is neither gay nor bi; he's just someone who follows his heart. Now, if they'd only got Noel Coward to write the music...
