The Gay Geek (May 21, 2008)

They've got style, that's what all those pics say:
A couple weeks ago, I mentioned that Johanna Draper Carlson was holding a contest for a male version of the Adam Hughes Women of the DC Universe poster that was distributed at the NY Comic Con. Well the entries are in and we have a winner:

First prize went to Jeff Hebert, who I thought nicely mixed personality (though I guess that's the Levitz-era Braniac 5) and sexiness:

Left to right: Oliver Queen, Hal Jordan, Querl Dox, Clark Kent, Bruce Wayne, Jason Todd, Wally West, John Stewart

I was most partial to Johnny Zito’s entry, which finished second. By duplicating the "dress white" dynamic of Hughes’ poster, I thought it worked best as a companion piece:

Left to right: John Stewart, Hal Jordan , Ryan Choi, Oliver Queen, Bruce Wayne, Clark Kent, Krypto, Barry Allen, Dick Grayson, John Henry Irons, Arthur Curry

If you liked those, be sure to check out all of the entries and to get to see larger version of the first and second place finishers.

Being a "gay" gamer:
Stories of people describing themselves as "gay" in gaming communities and thereby violating that community’s Terms of Service rules has come in many flavors. World of Warcraft ridiculously found a subscriber in violation of their sexual harassment policies for announcing her LGBT friendly guild. A later, more ambivalence-inspiring situation arose when City of Heroes came in for a bit of controversy because it doesn’t allow character names with “gay” in it. The word “gay” is also zapped by the game’s chat censor to prevent players from using the term in a way that disparages gays.

Now Microsoft is getting into the action, having required an X-Box Live player who played as “theGAYERgamer” to change his gamertag. An X-Box Live representative explained that the tag violates the TOS for “sexual innuendo”, adding that “TheStraighterGamer” and TheHeterosexualgamer” would also be subject to disciplinary action. (Though a commenter at GayGamer.net claims that a "StraightGamer" tag does exist.)

I’m not sure which part of that response infuriates me more. By saying that identifying yourself as gay is a “sexual innuendo” reveals a view that sees homosexuality as just a kinky fetish instead of a part of the human condition (to paraphrase the incredibly well chosen words of Jon Stewart), reminding me of that “rate your blog” webtool that initially declared use of “gay” as adult content.

Meanwhile, the claim that gamertags declaring the player’s heterosexuality would be similarly disciplined strikes me as either disingenuous or clueless to why minorities feel the need to proudly claim ownership of their identity.

I mean, let’s take a look at the Kotaku comment thread on the topic, where you can find comments like these:

There's still a strongly anti-gay sentiment to be found in the video gaming community, something straight gamers do not face, and one way a gay gamer can combat those attitudes is to be open about who they are confronting that kind of homophobia.

So we're getting Batwoman,

So we're getting Batwoman, Manhunter is returning, there's another Young Avengers/Runaway x-over in the mix... What else is awesome, queer and coming up in comics? Also, as to homophobia in online gaming, there's definitely a difference between the followings of various games. I don't mean to generalize, but I run across homophobia far more often on X-box live or on Battle.net than in, say, WoW (the Lich-King expansion is in late alpha supposedly!). But then again, the only time I ever ran into a homophobe in WoW, they got g-kicked and banned from our raids without me even having to say anything. Of course, my guilds always seemed to be filled with an inordinate number of female gamers, but even so I've been lucky in my guild-mates. Unfortunately I just re-installed the game after 6 months of not playing and... this stuff is like worse than crack.

Gay Online Gaming

I've had mixed but overall very positive experiences being out during online gaming. I play Call of Duty 4 on the PS3 frequently (probably too much) and while there are a few dinosaurs, the reaction to my gayboy screenname is anywhere from "ho hum" to hilarious razzing from teenage boys who just want to distract me with constant outrageous sexual comments ...they're laughing, I'm laughing...it's awesome. When I run into the occasional jerk, I just keep "killing" their avatars until they shut up out of respect.

interesting shows

Just by what you write, Fringe sounds like The Estate Within. Ill have to check it out.

And why are they messing with Life on Mars? The good thing is apparently it has Jason O'Mara in it. Yumm.

Great news about Caprica and Polly Walker, if anyone can play conniving beatch, she can. Im really exited about that show.

That gay gamer situation its just wrong. And what a lame reasoning from Microsoft. Shame on them.

Eliza Dushku returning AND Batwoman...

...in the same post. I may pee!! I loved Firefly (and Buffy/Angel) and was so disappointed to see it cancelled, so I'm really excited about a new Joss Wedon series. Though it sounds a little Pretender-like...it still sounds good. I'm a huge fan of Eliza Dushku (loved Tru Calling...does it say something about me that I keep liking shows that get cancelled)...so I'm thrilled to see her back in an action role. Batwoman...yum...'nuff said. Great post - I love your column...it gives me all the good gay geekiness that I have so been craving!!! PJ

New shows

The original Eleventh Hour starred Patrick Stewart (Capt. Picard) and Ashley Jensen (from Extras and Ugly Betty)Stewart was the scientist and Jensen was his police/bodyguard or something. As for Life on Mars, given that David E. Kelley is involved in this, I think we can assume we will see gay characters, however, they probably will be psychopathic serial killers, transvestite prostitute murder victims or some other pariah like role, which is Kelley's typical MO (can you tell I hate him?)

Actually...

Kelley is off the series and the former October Road showrunners are in charge now. I was actually looking forward to what Kelley might do considering how the original matched with him in issues, but the trailer is really bad (about as bad as the early clips of NBC's Coupling, I'm afraid).

Esai Morales...

...is completely yummy. Will make watching this good even though you can take Eric Stoltz. I've heard he has been an insufferable diva on set in the past. I saw an interview with him years ago and he was just awful. That show "The State Within" (not Estate) was originally written to be a series and for various reasons got scrapped after the initial mini-series. Too bad, as the original cast was Jason Isaacs and Ben Daniels. They are both amazing. Noam Jenkins' character died (he was the second half of the great Ben kiss) Will be interesting to see if they can sustain the breathless pace of the mini-series. Bit of trivia- the crash set was done on a freeway outside of Toronto and people thought it was real as there were not enough signs stating that it was a movie set. The cops got bombarded with 911 calls.

I say we take the warning labels off everything and let nature take it's course.

Batwoman!

Another great Gay Geek Lyle - thanks for keeping us informed!

My boyfriend LOVES Batwoman, and will be SO excited to hear her series is finally coming! (Now I just have to remember to tell him about it!)

As for the new shows, I'll withold judgement until I see them I think...

Thanks! 8)
