Poll: Does this Ben & Jerry's ad hit the spot ... or miss the mark?
The above ad for Ben & Jerry's new "Flipping Out" ice cream has been causing a buzz over the last week. The new concoction is touring the northeast U.S., and will make stops at events such as the upcoming Philly Pride Day. The ad features the B&J cow turned upside-down with the caption, "We married fudge, ice cream & brownies. Don't worry, it's legal in Vermont". From the online chatter, most people find it hilarious, but there are those who question the "world turned upside down" execution. Ben & Jerry's have been ardent supporters of the LGBT community, so there's no doubt it's well-intentioned, but is there something off-putting about it? Take our poll and let us know what you think! I'm missing the point
I think I'm missing the point, because I can't get past the fact that "fudge" is so prominent in the ad, and it part of an offensive name we've been called so frequently. That's what jumps out at me so much (not the upside down cow) - even past my unhealthy love affair with chocolate.
That said, it's not offensive, it's well intentioned, and I'll admit to needing to get my sense of humor tuned up, because it shouldn't bother me in the least. It's just that somehow, it misses with me.
You're not alone
That's where my mind first went when I first saw the ad, as well... though, I probably wouldn't have reacted that way if I saw the ad in a store and didn't know in advance that the ad was referring to gay marriage.
Since I knew the ad was about gay marriage before I read what it said, the mention of fudge gave me pause -- which might not have been the case if I had to read the copy before realizing they were talking about gay marriage.
It would be funnier

...and I feel fine...
Or so sayeth Michael Stipe.
To me the humor here is subtly making fun of the idea that anything new is a bad thing. The world has been turned upside-down, yet the cow is content in it's pasture as always.
I think it's cute
This marriage they're talking about is an obviously delicious thing, so the fact that anyone would be worried about it is making fun of the idea that some people are actually worried over other obviously great marriages. At least, that's how I took it.

the cow....
the cow upside down didnt even register to me as "the world has turned upside down"
i just thought it was supposed to be some cute thing. anyways, i dont see a problem with it. seems humorous
Unintentional
Unintentional but plays into sterotypes!
I sort of get it, but the
Made me giggle
Haha!
If it's legal in vermont does that make it illegal to eat anywhere else? Surely lots of people would love fudge, ice-cream and brownies outside of vermont, even if the world does have to 'turn upside-down' to get it. lol. as for the fudge issue, lots of ice-cream flavours have fudge in it, and their 'fudge brownies' arn't they? as for the upside down i thought thats about the fact the you turn the tub upside down? or am i just making a fool of myself as per usual? lol
My tounge would catch your tounge...were the world mine :-)
why Vermont?
I'm not American, but I thought Vermont was generally good in this regard? And they have legalized gay marraige now, haven't they? Or maybe they picked it because they figured Vermont would be less likely to be offended.
What I noticed is that there are three flavors in this marriage, which made me wonder if some people will interpret it as part of the non-existent movement to legalize group marriage. (That's what annoys me so much about the slippery slope argument. There simply isn't a group waiting in the wings to fight for group marriage.) But I don't think it was meant to be analysed in that much detail. I think it was meant to be cheeky and light hearted. Along the lines of: "Oops! We used the word 'marriage' the wrong way. I guess the world's going to turn upside down now."
Probably doesn't translate..
thanks for the explanation
Is it weird that they're marrying THREE things?
I think
There is a comma between fudge, and ice cream.
Upside Down?
People that actually whistle while they work deserve what they get.
Upside down
That's how the new "flipped out" products are served. You turn them upside down to plate them.
Sometimes we read way too much into the simplest of things.
Upside Down?
The fact that the cow doesn't seem at all put out by being upside down seems the most salient point. As far as she's conserned, all is well. It's everyone else that's off.
People that actually whistle while they work deserve what they get.
To me, it's like one of
To me, it's like one of those shock value jokes. It's saying "Yeah, you're uptight, but it's really happening some where out there" as if it's the viewer's worst nightmare come true. A bit like Howard Stern, but more subtle. Probably a better example is The Black White Supremist from Chapelle Show. Very amusing.
Ben & Jerry's
Love it! Love Ben & Jerry's icecream! I'll be in the States in July and I'll be eating a lot of Ben & Jerry's!! It's so much less expensive than in Europe! If it didn't melt, I'd bring tons home!
Anyway - - - I think the publicity is fine! Not offensive I'd say.

They're both chocolate
Until I started reading the comments I never even paused at the word "fudge". Well, actually I did. I thought fudge and brownies? That's a bit too chocolately for me. Then I realized that was part of the point. They've married chocolate fudge with chocolate brownies. Imagine that, two of the same thing married together.
BTW, I've been to the mecca that is Ben & Jerry's. If your summer plans bring you anywhere near VT, head to Burlington for a sweet, fun, day.
Wow
Ad is quite cute and funny
