MTV puts "Rocky Horror Picture Show" remake on the slab
Now they've gone...too far. In Hollywood's latest attempt to cannibalize itself until there's nothing left but fingernails and one butt cheek, MTV has announced that they're readying a remake of the cult classic of all cult classics, The Rocky Horror Picture Show:
"The two-hour remake will use the original screenplay by Jim Sharman and Richard O'Brien but may also include music not featured in the original. Helmer and casting decisions have yet to be announced."
Do they honestly believe they can improve on the original, which was a once in a lifetime alignment of casting, tone, and era?
Yes, i can see it now: in the role of Janet, making her motion picture debut, it's Ali Lohan! And here he comes, to do the timewarp again, in the pivotal role of the sweet transvestite himself, Dr. Frank-N-Furter, it's Zac Efron! Well, there's one way this version might surpass the original: in the joy viewers get from throwing things at the screen. For fans of the original, are you willing to give this remake a chance, or does the whole idea make you want to jump to the left, and step to the right, and out the window? No
No! No! No! No!
Horrible!
Never!
Ick!
I don't know...if they used
I don't know...if they used the recent Broadway revival for inspiration this could be quite good. I saw it and it was so great. It was a bit more goth and sexual, with much stronger voices singing the songs. The songs are really different when you get really great rock voices to sing them. Lea Delaria was particularly genius casting in Meatloaf's role. I'd love if they kept that role as a woman in drag (Delaria herself or how about Rosie O'Donnel...thatd be hilarious and I bet she'd do it).
I could also totally see Pink as Magenta (heh) and Mandy Moore as Janet. Maybe Jack Black as Riff-Raff?
Agreed
If Zac Efron as much as
Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka have done it on stage
As can be seen here --

How about Cheyenne Jackson as Rocky?
Don't tease me!
Let's do the Time Warp again!
Time is fleeting
Madness takes its toll...
Ahh... But listen closely...
Not for very much longer...
I've got to keep control.
I remember doing the Time Warp.
Drinking those moments when
The blackness would hit me.
And the void would be calling.
Let's do the Time Warp again!
Let's do the Time Warp again!
It's just a jump to the left.
And then a step to the right.
With your hand on your hips.
You bring your knees in tight.
But it's the pelvic thrust.
They really drive you insa-ya-yane
Let’s do the Time Warp again!
Let's do the Time Warp again!
It's so dreamy
Oh, fantasy free me
So you can't see me
No not at all.
In another dimension
With voyeuristic intention.
Well secluded
I see all...
With a bit of a mind flip...
You're into a time slip...
And nothing can ever be the same.
You're spaced out on sensation.
Like you're under sedation.
Let's do the Time Warp again!
Let's do the Time Warp again!
Well, I was walking down the street
Just having a think
When a snake of a guy
Gave me an evil wink.
Well it shook me up
It took me by surprise
He had a pick-up truck
And the devil's eyes
He stared at me
And I felt a change
Time meant nothing
Never would again.
Let's do the Time Warp again!
Let's do the Time Warp again!
It's just a jump to the left.
And then a step to the right.
With your hands on your hips.
You bring you knees in tight.
But it's the pelvic thrust...
That really drives you insa-ya-ya-yane
Let's do the Time Warp again!
Let's do the Time Warp again!
Let's do the Time Warp again!
Ah! Oh! Oh! Yeoooww... Ahhhh.
Let's do the Time Warp again!"
Sacrilege
Broadway, yes. MTV nooo!!! I shuddered when, for a moment, thought Efron and Lohan had already been cast.
I guess this is inevitable. Hope they dont succumb to much to the commercial machine and they tweenerize it.
Oh, the thought. Horrible!!!
I'd give it a shot
I'd give it a shot, I mean you never know, it might be good. Will it be as good as the frist one, of course not, and I think that if they go into it not trying to out do the first one, but rather try to pay a great tribute to it, then it might be ok.
Reality BS
I think that part of the twisted charm of Rocky Horror is that it looks like it was filmed one weekend by drunk drag queens on a 50 dollar budget. You just know there will have a casting show where they are looking for Brad, Janet, Frank, etc.
Rocky better be an Adonis.
The Original Live Version
Yes, I'm that old...which got enough buzz going that they did the movie, was much more of a rock tribute to the horror genre, hence the title. The songs had more of a 50s quality and were pretty extensively reworked for the movie. It was a phenom all its own though not in the sense the movie was. In some ways the movie was genius, even though no one got it at the time. It was very much proto goth and really captured a particular moment in time. Much of the genderf#%* sensibility was lost on middle America, even wrapped as it was in the campy sensibility. No doubt why it bombed.
Nous Sommes Tous Sauvages.
Tim Curry is irreplaceable, but...
afhickman
"It takes a village (to make Village People)"
Yes, by all means, keep Zac Efron away from the fishnets! Unless they want him to play Brad--maybe. The only man capable of filling Tim Curry's pumps is Ville Valo, the lead singer for HIM, whose photo I have posted before:
It's the role he was born to play! And can he sing? Take a listen:

If they REALLY plan to do a remake, that is.
dont do it!
Riffraff is replaceable
