Holy Pazuzu! "Gay exorcism" vid provokes outrage, ridicule

Above you can see a news report about the sad, infuriating, but somehow inevitable video making the rounds of an alleged "gay exorcism" at a Connecticut church.

What's interesting is the way that the story is being covered. Most articles aren't giving the "religious freedom" aspect any credence, and are focusing on how outraged most sensible people are about the abusive vid. And they're giving various gay groups the opportunity to speak out and call for investigations:

"I think it's horrifying," Robin McHaelen, executive director of True Colors, told the Associated Press, referring to the video posted by Manifested Glory's now-defunct YouTube page. "What saddens me is the people that are doing this think they are doing something in the kid's best interests, when in fact they're murdering his spirit."

All of this begs the question, "what goes into a gay exorcism, anyway?" Judging by the vomit, I'd say this incident backfired. I guess enticing the kid with nude pics of Ann Coulter was a mistake.

You know, I have a really

You know, I have a really twisted sense of humor, and I can laugh at just about anything.

I don't find this even remotely funny.  In fact, I find it to be horribly disturbing, like watching someone torture a dog or something.

    UMMMM

I don't know whether to laugh my ass off or vomit in disgust.

Gay and lesbian rights are not special rights in any way. It isn't "special" to be free from discrimination. It is an ordinary, universal entitlement of citizenship."

    Terrifying.

You'd think with all the famine and war in the world, religious leaders would concentrate on these issues rather than trying to rid the world of "homosexual demons". It still amazes me that although the majority of world religions accept homosexuality, awful things like this pop up and undermine the progress that's been made. I really hope this boy is identified and goes on to live his life as a proud gay man - there's nothing demonic about that.

    oh dear

sadly, this doesn't shock me. I do feel awful for the boy though

also, why should we expect them to focus on the religious aspect of it all? they have the freedom to religion. enough said. they can do what they want.

there. before any trolls come, i stated it

Even religion has its limits under the law

Although the First Amendment says that Congress shall not establish a religion nor prohibit people from practising whichever religion they believe, there have been examples of the law curtailing religious activity, such as putting an end to polygamy in the Mormon Church.

In this case, I should think the situation would call for an investigation into child abuse (though it is never clarified how old the young man is).

    It's horrifying.

Man, oh man.  I feel for

Man, oh man.  I feel for that poor kid.  As someone who went through similar experiences and was in churches with similar philosophies, I definitely sympathize.  For the record, b/c the video didn't address it, the instance of vomiting is considered a good sign to the process... they believe that it's a physical proof that the demon is leaving, that the body is assisting the spirit in expelling the demon.  (I was actually trained in how to do this.  Scary, huh?)

Most likely, the kid agreed or possibly even asked to be prayed for in this manner, but what I find most disturbing is that, in that situation, most people don't know they have any other choice.  Because of the religious view of homosexuality - that it is a sin that destroys your soul and sins you to hell - what else are you supposed to do but try to get rid of it?  Of course, in the process, you psychologically and emotionally damage the person for life and set them up for all kinds of disorders and miserable relationships.  I think it sucks that people don't have the knowledge of, this is not a matter of attacking your religion or religious freedom, this is a matter of making healthy decisions and you DO have other options.

I hope that kid finds out he has other options.

    How is that legal?

Seriously? I don't get it. You can't punch a guy if he calls you faggot. But getting Assulted by a large angery mob cause you might be gay is alright. I can just see Polo's defense now for punching Perez. - "I was performing an exorcism.".

I think there should be a warning before anyone watches it. It's very disturbing. Poor guy. :(

    How Awful

The saddest part about that video is that it made the news because it happened in Connecticut. When stuff like that happens down here in the south, no one so much as bats an eye.

    I was worried...

then I heard this was in Connecticut. I though that kind of thing would only happen in Colorado or Utah or somewhere in the Bible Belt.

Disgusting. Here's hoping that kid gets away from his family and moves to somewhere where he can be who he is.

    Sick

    Sick I tell you.

This is not free choice. This is a boy not knowing he had other options.
