The Week in Gay Geek: Who draws the hottest comic guys?
This week:
Check it all out after the break!
PUT MANHUNTER BACK IN THE CANCELED PILE:
Manhunter Manhunter has its share of gay fans for a number of reasons: not only did the comic finally out Obsidian, a character long hinted as gay, but it also gave us one of the DC Universe's most compelling female characters and an inventive take on the DC Universe. Manhunter was canceled twice before, but strong collection sales prompted DC to bring back the series twice. I'm more than a little behind on this title but it was easily one of my favorites when I was buying it monthly. Besides, the way Andreyko handled Obsidian was easily the most positive gay character in superhero comics. Thus, I'm disappointed to hear it's ending ... again.
THERE'S ALWAYS TIME TO DISCUSS HOT COMIC GUYS: "First, they didn't do a crappy vampire comic. As someone who works in the manga business, I can attest that if you want to sell to teenage girls, you put out something with vampires in it. It doesn't have to be any good. Just look at Twilight. One crappy vampire comic could have kept Minx afloat for years. Second, almost none of the creators involved could draw sexy guys... Why are American cartoonists so bad at drawing hot men? Japanese cartoonists can draw hot men. European cartoonists can draw hot men. Not as hot as the ones the Japanese cartoonists draw, but guys like Moebius at least put in an effort." Garrity uses the point as an excuse to ask a variety of people to pick which artist draws the hottest guys, with gay fave Carla Speed McNeil getting the most mentions. I've known a number of gay comic fans who are smitten with Jaeger, the hero of McNeil's comic Finder and it's hard not to see the appeal:
Finder's Jaeger But since it's always a fun topic (and one we haven't discussed yet) I figured why not ask: Which artist draws the hottest guy? Anyone who has chatted comics with me should know that Rick Mays has been one of my favorite artists ever since he drew Roy Harper flexing his abs while peeling off a tight t-shirt in Arsenal #1. The manga-influenced Mays can certainly draw sexy guys, but he also creates some wonderfully dynamic art. Even better, his art meshes wonderfully with Adam Warren's scripts.
Don't you hate it when dialogue bubbles get in the way? My love for gay artist Stephen Sadowski's work is primarily for his ability to lead my eye the way the story requires, but it certainly helps that he can draw some sexy guys. I still remember the sound of jaws dropping when Wildcat's bath was interrupted by the Injustice Society.
Wildcat from JSA #10 I guess I'd have to agree that Strangers in Paradise creator Terry Moore didn't draw many good looking guys who weren't David Qin ... but this is David we're talking about.
Strangers in Paradise's David Qin And I couldn't possibly leave Phil Jimenez off a list of artists who draws sexy guys ... well, considering that finding the right sample image taxed my Google-fu, maybe a lazier geek could.
A sample of Phil Jiminez's art in the camptastic Codename: Knockout That's just a few top-of-mind picks. Who are your favorites? Let's discuss it in the comments!
WE FINALLY CAPTURED FURY, WHO HAS THE THONG AND HARNESS?:
Seriously. There are no words. Wow. I didn't realize they still made such unintentionally homoerotic comics. I haven't seen anything like this since Tony Stark spent an entire issue of The Avengers wearing only Dr. Donald Blake's jacket tied around his waist.
HAVE YOU GOTTEN SOME SAME-SEX WEDDING BELLS TO RING, YET?:
Fable 2 I'm not sampling Fable 2 myself. Since I don't own an X-Box 360, I'm hoping we'll eventually see a Windows version (which his how I got to play Fable). Still, if anyone out there is playing Fable 2 I'd love to hear your reaction to the game ... does it live up to the original? Submitted by on Thu, 2008-10-23 11:12. |

Ooh, beefcake!
I know both Stephen Sadowsky and Phil Jimenez make a point of drawing hunky men (and they pull it off superbly), but it didn't occur to me to think of Rick Mays as a beefcake artist (but I totally agree with you. I'd also include Adam Warren, check his "Empowered" books out).
But I'd say Bryan Hitch drew the most gorgeous men during his run on the Authority book. LOVED his Jack Hawksmoore. Also, Byrne drew the most woof-tastic Superman ever, during his tenure on the title, and Kevin Maguire really impressed me with his Blue Bettle and Booster Gold in a Bialyan prison scene years ago...
Manhunter, Artists...
Well, that's bumming news about Manhunter being cancelled again. I started to pick it up once Todd (Obsidian) started appearing in it. It's been pretty good all the time. Not my favorite, but well written for certain. Oh well, at least that trims my comic budget (ever so slightly)! Hopefully we'll still get to see more of Todd, and a personal life for him, in JSA, but I kinda doubt it with tha huge cast. And Manhunter has been pretty prominent in Birds of Prey, so hopefully we'll still see her there, if they don't kill her off...!
I agree with all your artist assessments, and totally loved how Rick Mays drew that Arsenal mini. Roy was oh, so hot in it, and you picked some great panels to display! (Damn word balloons!) I've often hoped to see more of his stuff around, but haven't noticed it in anything I read. I kinda wish he was drawing the Titans. I'm sure he'd draw all the guys great. Which reminds me, while I'm move of a twink-type fan, I always thought Ian Churchill's drawings of Power Boy were quite hot (too bad PB was a bit of a louse)! But obviously Steven Sadowski and Phil Jiminez are fantastic artists of guys. And I think James mentioned Bryan Hitch - he can do a fabulous job! So can Alan Davis, I think. His second run on Excalibur actually made Nightcrawler very attractive. And Geroge Perez has actually done some very impressive pieces (I think on comission) of the New Teen Titans. I think you can see some of them at the Titans Tower website ( http://www.titanstower.com/index.html ), in the Gallery section.
Hmm...I may have more thoughts on this, but I have to go home now.
Thanks for the great geek as always, Lyle!

Strangers in Paradise attitudes to women
I'm curious what Terry Moore has said about the gay content in Strangers in Paradise. It features a central girl-on-girl romance between the two leads, who are richly and realistically drawn, but there is a weird scene where a male character explains to Katchoo that "I know lesbians, and you are NOT a lesbian."
Well, the lesbian he knows is his evil sister, who runs some kind of wildly unrealistic crime ring and is a one-dimensional villain. The comic seemed to be setting up a contrast between cartoonish Evil Lesbians and the Real Women who may occasionally kiss other girls while waiting for true love with a man.
Was I reading the comic in an over-sensitive way? That scene really surprised me, because the two female leads were so well-written, yet when the scare-word of "lesbian" came up, Moore seemed to change his tone and want to classify their love as some kind of distraction or detour to their true destiny in the arms of a man. The implication was that that if they were actually lesbians, they'd be unnatural monsters like David's sister. It was weird, and it left a bad taste in my mouth.
Has Terry Moore ever addressed this?
P.S. OMG Shaenon Garrity I loved Narbonic and your husband is fucking hot.
No, not "distant gay traces" -- it's distingué traces!
I'm not really a comics
Bisco Hatori
Bisco Hatori is on eof my favorite manga artists. I love the way she draws both men and women.

They're balloons!
What kind of geek are you? They're BALLOONS, not bubbles!
