The Week in Gay Geek: Barrowman is a "G-Double-E-K", the X-Men take San Francisco and more!
WARM UP YOUR VOCAL CHORDS FOR A "ONE OF US" CHANT: "I grew up watching Doctor Who," he says. "I'm of the Star Wars generation; I love science fiction. Star Trek: The Next Generation, Battlestar Galactica ... love 'em." "I love every morning, getting up to go to work because that little boy inside of me jumps with excitement every time I'm going to fight an alien or shoot a rocket gun or be on a spaceship or be with the Doctor or get onto the TARDIS," he gushes. "So every time I'm working on it, I'm really, really happy." Barrowman: "G-Double-E-K" Okay, so there's a little optimist Lyle on one shoulder and a cynic Lyle on the other. The optimist is going "Aw, sah-woon." while the cynic is muttering something about people who say they like Star Trek and follow the sentiment with a series of imitations of Checkov asking about "nuclear wessels". METAPHORS FOR QUEER RIGHTS MOVE TO SAN FRANCISCO, FILM AT ELEVEN: Q: Is there a chance we might see one of the X-Men come out? A: Yes. Yes. The city being what it is, certain characters whose sexuality might have been ambiguous are going to feel free to be who they are. I will qualify and say that I never go into the situation with a mandate or an agenda. It has to come along naturally. We're not going to rush into it. But I see it happening. San Francisco, open your Golden Gates... Considering the current team working on the X-Men, I see more than a little reason for optimism. Alonso is the editor responsible for Peter Milligan's excellent run on X-Force/X-Factor and the current X-Men writing team includes people responsible for some notable gay moments in comics. Uncanny X-Men is co-written by Ed Brubaker, who created Holly, the temporary successor to Selina Kyle, in his Catwoman run. The adjectiveless title (currently called X-Men: Legacy) comes from the pen of Mike Carey who's was very gay-inclusive on Vertigo titles like Lucifer and Hellblazer, even though in most cases that was a matter of including gay people amid those titles' high bodycount. Finally, Astonishing X-Men has the mind of Apollo and Midnighter creator Warren Ellis working for it. From the way Alonso phrases things, it sounds like any gay mutant who might come out would be one who has been quietly coming to terms with their sexuality for a while ... so who's been pinging your gaydar? Anyone think it might turn out that Beast wasn't joking when he came out a few years back? The new Infinity Inc. By the way, speaking of Peter Milligan, is anyone reading his gender-twisting work on Infinity Inc. at DC? There's nothing specifically gay about the series, so far, but the series includes one guy who sometimes deals with his insecurity by turning into a woman (leading to plenty of gay teasing from one friend) and another guy whose struggle with narcissism is complicated by his ability to clone himself. Of course, the series is already has its final issue scheduled to come out in a few months. Sigh. AFTER THE BREAK: New life for the gayest video game never to get a US port, Calvin and Hobbes gets mashed up and more! MUSCLEMAN SHOOTER GO!: No, I wasn't exaggerating about the flying bathtub or the Elvis/house guy: For years, US gamers had to rely on other gamers' recaps of the Cho Aniki games or have had to mod their game systems to be able to play an import version if they wanted to sample Cho Aniki for themselves. But that might change soon. There's a rumored Cho Aniki game in the works for the PSP and, if I'm understanding things correctly, the PSP doesn't come with the region-coding that most game consoles do, which would be the closest we're likely to get to seeing the franchise being sold in the states. Buff bosses are a part of even the first Cho Aniki game: It looks like the PSP game will be a part of the original Cho Aniki, which is the hardest to find. It's also said to have the least amount of homoeroticsm, but with screens like the one above, it's probably way ahead of most games coming out. GUESS THE GAY FAVE MARVEL HEROINE I'D LIKE TO SEE HIM TEAM WITH: So do those deleted scenes also reveal Mama Petrelli's powers? Kensei's power certainly would have been an interesting one to see in use but I wonder if the frustrating second season of Heroes could have been up to such a challenge. FINDING LOVE IN (MUMBLE), FIGHTING EVIL IN LIPSTICK: Mac lipstick transformation! I do like the sparkly magical girl-style transformation that comes with the switch. NEXT UP, BOB's BIG BOY, OR MAYBE A SOPRANO: A peek at Calvin and Jobs
That gets me wondering: What would a Calvin and Hodg comic look like? Calvin and John Hodgman Submitted by on Wed, 2008-08-13 13:11. |

*puts hat back on* *still fits* *oh dear*
I guess you can count Barrowman as a geek. He has talked about being totally and embarassingly starstruck when he met George Lucas at the Cannes Film Festival. Here's an interview (.wav) with him where he tells the story at around 7 min. And later he even talks about his action-figure collection.
And in the Torchwood 2 bloopers you can hear that he has the Doctor Who theme as a ringtone.
*puts hat back off* *phew*
Ooooh....
I tried to use the doctor
i surtanly hope for some
i surtanly hope for some more gay inclusion for uncanny x-men now that they have moved to San Francisco.I think a book like x-men needs as much diversity as possibly and not just for LGBT but for all minority groups as this is the core theme for x-men.Please ooh please get Northstar a bloody boyfriend allready the closest he has gotten to love (in normal non-ultimate U anyway)was fall in love with a straight team mate....talk about sad.
i'm carefully optimistic about this new evolution but with marvel i have found out its best to see first and then belief the promises they make.I guess what happend in ultimate x-men is still slowly digesting :)
Gays are the last X-frontier
Overall they've done very well over the years in the X-Men comics (and seemingly endless spinoffs) with gender and ethnic diversity. A far cry from when they were all a bunch of white teenagers.
But it has long been ironic how an entire comic series devoted to the concept of characters that are feared and hated by society has such a hard time with inclusion of gay characters. Northstar has pretty much been around as a wallflower or else to be killed. Indeed, it sometimes seems like he's the hottest contender to break Jean Grey's record for number of times a significant character can die. But otherwise he's been without purpose for years.
It's just funny that there's a rationale here that gays might show up more being that the X-Men have relocated to the San Fran area. After all, they've been not far from NYC for decades and it didn't do much for their gay quotient.
Excelsior! :)
Excelsior!

X-men
Well I have certainly been waiting for someone on the team to come out, me and my friends have always guessed it would be Bobby Drake (Iceman). Because of his incredibly horrible track record with women.
Other Characters who I wouldn't mind being gay or bi,
Gambit,
Nghtcrawler,
Cannonball,
Multiple Man. (He's still over in the X-factor comic though right?)
Ah well a man can dream lol...
Iceman
From what I have heard the
It's kind of a freebie, so they should just pick it up again
HeH!
I know plenty of people who's days would be made if they did do so, including mine. I like Bobby, him and Jamie Madrox are the two X-characters whose powers i want the most. Besides Bobby has in most incarnations been quite the looker so I would definitly be cool with that.
I mean the last relationship they had him in was with Mystique. (Shudders) Poor Bobby, I had to take sandpaper to my skin to clean myself after that lol.... It ended of course disastourously, take the hint Iceman the ladies they aren't for you lol..
It definitely would be cool (pun intended)
Yeah, Mystique. Kinda gross in my opinion too. Still, think about it. Dating a shapeshifter has to be the best thing ever, as long as you actually like their personality. I mean come on, you never have to lust over anyone besides your partner ever again because your partner can just change themself into them! See some hottie by the pool you like? "Honey, think you could do that tonight?"
I'm telling you, Wiccan has scored the golden prize with Hulkling!
As for a gay Iceman. Yeah, I think I'd be pretty happy with that too. But odds are they'd pick someone more obscure (and expendable) if they chose anyone at all. I really wish that story with Northstar had panned out.
But changing writers and realities can nix developing storylines, especially gay ones. How many times has a reboot kept an actual coming out from fully happening in DC's Legion of Superheroes? Before this latest reboot they were clearly building that Brainiac 5 had a thing for Invisible Kid. But that vanished into reboot land. Damn it!
Its not about Mystique's Gender
Its about Mystique in general, I mean i kept on hoping Bobby wasn't that stupid. That women is nothing but trouble. And she proved it in the end anyways, so I was vindicated.
Yeah that whole gay thing has happend more than a few times. In both DC and Marvel, looks like their buiding twoards a gay reveal and then bam! new writer/reboot and what are you talking about gay it never happend. I am just glad thet they finally stopped being wishy washy about Obsidian even if he had to go evil and try to take over the world before they finally snapped him out of it.
Oh I wasn't saying it was.
I agree Mystique's a duplicitous skank no matter what she turns herself into. That's why I said the real shape-shifting prize is Hulkling. Probably the only relationship Mystique ever had that worked was with Destiny. But, given Bobby's ability to select relationships that are guaranteed to crash and burn, taking up with her is not a surprise. That's why the gay thing works. Gay guys that haven't come to terms with it yet often get into doomed relationships with women. That was certainly the case with Obsidian.
Obsidian was suspected for years but it's notable that they outed him in Manhunter and not in JSA or some other book. Manhunter is a more "mature" title than a lot of others (for example: Kate's ex-husband held in naked bondage by Phobia). But we don't see Todd or hear mention of his orientation or boyfriend in JSA.
Well, Marvel may indeed not want to rock the boat. But I will admit freely that my spend on comics is oriented towards gay-friendly titles. The X-titles haven't really been on my list in a while. The messy continuityhas been getting to me, and as much as I love Emma Frost I'm getting tired of watching her dry hump Cyclops in almost every frame they're in. A little gay love might renew my interest, and willingness to buy. And I think most X-title readers have gotten the "discrimination is bad" message now to the point that they'd be able to cope.
Given how much a comic book costs nowadays I think that there's only a few really clueless people who haven't read a comic in 25 years that think they're targeted at kids anymore. I honestly can't recall the last time I saw a pre-teen in my local comic book store on their own. Usually when there are any in there it's because Daddy is shopping for comics for himself.
I have a love hate relationship with comics.
The last few years I have been avoiding them because mostly there isn't a lot out there that interests me.
Especially with DC and Marvel just doing the whole, BIG CROSSOVERS THAT NEVER EFFING END THING!
They wouldn't be so bad ,if I don't know, they were interesting plots but they are so god awful boring nowadays, change for change sake, no real character development. The only really cool storyline in the last few years was the whole, Piper and Trickster thing in Countdown. That of course didn't end so good for poor Trickster.
I have a trade of the original Crisis, OMG it reads like its Shakespeare and this more modern drek reads as if its penny romance novels.
Not that I have hated everything that they have done recently but almost everytime they have a plot that I like ,they can it , change writers, orsweep it under the carpet.
Honestly I am a DC fanboy so thats what I mostly have in my collection though I pick up Marvel and Independants if I read something on the shelf and like it and have the money (Often X-factor will get my extra comics money lol.)
But I have been just pretty much not touching books as of late. I miss my monthlys, I used to do Harley Quinn, Young Justice, Superboy, Deadman, and Green Lantern but most of those are either cancelled or warped so far beyond what they used to be they aren't worth it.
I sometimes pick up Shadowpact, and X-factor if I have the cash, and various indeps if they look interesting.
Comics in general depress me nowadays , i think it has to do with management and the way they look at the characters as commodities instead of characters.
Total agreement Trevorfrost
The X-titles actually started getting rather repetitive to me, and with all the continuity shifting I really just couldn't follow them anymore. After 20 years they either need to freshen it up or just let it go.
I've become very erratic in my comics purchases these last few years. There are few titles I follow consistently. If there's gay characters I'm more likely to buy them. Not guaranteed though. The Authority titles are an example of something that is either really great or really awful. Sadly it's been more awful than great lately and Midnighter's solo series never really appealed very much.
Usually I pick stuff up and follow it for a few issues before getting bored and giving up. It's kind of sad really. But I think that the use of the characters has been so poor and the erratic nature of the storylines so bad that it's just not easy to follow.
I do get some scorn from people because I was actually a fan of Crossgen's range of titles. To me it was very novel the way that they had all those books in different genres as part of an integrated universe and storyline. But I think they tried to drag the plot out too long and people started to drift away.
Maybe there's just enough originality and character development anymore? It all just seems to be about ultra-violence and splashy scenes.
Sad to Say
I generally have seen better writing for comic book characters by fan fiction writers than actual comic book writers mostly nowadays. (I read this really cool but angsty Bobby/Jamie fic the other day lol..)
Especially with DC and Marvel, but that again has nothing to do with the characters themselves and sometimes doesn't have anything to even do with the writers. Its all about marketing and such. Everytime a television show or movie comes out the knee jerk reaction is to try and make changes to the core comics to somehow tie into the movie or TV show. This and other strange orders to comic book writers from on high by editorial, can cause the strangest things to happen. Well and then there is us comic book fans, we aren't totally blameless.
You have pro change, anti-change, rabid fans of all types.. Its very confusing to watch the flip flopping that happens because of fan reaction. Some editors and writers will latch onto an idea no matter how awful and continue forward. On the other hand some things like Hal Jordan's return were mandated cause they decided the fans were right after all or something like that. Which to me is dissapointing cause after sticking to their guns all those years the characters that they had introduced finally were starting to be rock solid and interesting. And then to take it all back. BAH!
Introducing stuff and then taking it back isnt' the way it should be done, Sigh...
Yea it would certanly be
Yea it would certanly be alot of fun if Bobby turned out to be gay,one writer in the past has very very carefully touched on the subtext of that but i don't think marvel will have the nuts to go there.Ever fearfull of those religious people they will probably use ONE OF Madrox's dupes(if they ever go there)as a boyfriend for Northstar, that is not high profile and its easy to put on the backburner or even eliminate all together if things get to hot under there feet.
Remember marvel is playing a highrisk game these days and have alot of (borrowed) money in movies so they don't wanna upset any1.I think this is the main reason the x-men play around in SF these days that way you can please the gayfans because uuhm wel it is SF and one of the characters will probably say something like "we protect ALL people of this city"with "all" in bold as to trow a bown for us gays :) but never actually show any gaycharacters so they don't upset the religious people.
Spoilers for Heroes!
If you are curious, Angela Petrelli's power was revealed in an implied way. Since her ability is not one that can be shown with special effects, it has to be done that way.
**SPOILERS**
Her ability is to influence. Most probably through touch.

STAR TREK: Blood and Fire premiering at Dragon*CON...
One more for your review, Lyle.
A rough cut of STAR TREK: BLOOD AND FIRE, the gay-themed episode of the STAR TREK: PHASE II series, is set to premiere at Dragon*CON on Labor Day weekend. The story, which started life as a Next Generation script that was never produced, has had a long and windy road to production.
Pardon my shameless plug, but there's more about the epi here, from its co-writer and producer: http://www.doorq.com/Blog.aspx?b=1615.
