The Week in Gay Geek: "Dr. Horrible's" Dark Horse debut, fanboys go official and more!
CITY OF FILMMAKERS: "No matter if you’re a daring do-gooder or a dastardly deceiver - everyone has a dark side, skeletons in the closet, secret fans of the N-gage ... whatever. We’re asking you to manifest some mischief in a Machinima piece, where games and movies come together, and win some great prizes while you’re at it. So when it comes to trick or treating, lay hard on the tricks, which shouldn’t be a problem with super powers." The difference between creating machinima in a MMO like City of Heroes and a game like The Sims, is that you’ll need some actors to help you out … which makes it helpful that the Q Pride Prom is happening this weekend. If you’re thinking of making a fabulous gay-themed movie, that would be a great chance to meet up with some potential cast members. Just come up with something more entertaining than the “inspirational video” offered by the contest: Sheesh, is it really necessary to make use of a yellowface accent when playing the Tsoo? HAVE YOU MET CAPTAIN HAMMER?:
It’s only a small taste, so far, but as it’s less than a week before Dr. Horrible makes its debut, it should hold me. I hope. Lots more Geek after the jump! SO MANY SUPERHERO MMO UNIVERSES, SO LITTLE TIME:
The game certainly sounds promising … and if anyone tells me that there’s a 30th Century or Gemworld zone in the game, I’ll be rushing out to the stores for this one. That's right, I said the "Gemworld". POST-APOCALYPTIC GAYS, YEA OR NAY? Which of the following, if any, will be featured in Fallout3; Romance, Sex, Homosexuality, Nudity, Prostitution, Slavery, Cannibalism, Children, Child killings, drugs, addictions? And of the things that won't be featured, can you explain why they won't be included in the game? It touches on most of those. Slavery, children, drugs and addiction more than the others, as those factor for into the setting more. In regards to nudity and child killings, no, it features neither of those, as they don't really add to the flavor of the game (I'll get into children in the next question more). I think if you look at Fallout 1, and the footprint it has with the topics you ask about, Fallout 3 is pretty much the same, in that it features the types of things you mention at about the same rate, no more, no less. Drugs and drug addiction play a larger role perhaps, as it's a key gameplay device. I think the heart of this question is "has the harshness and maturity of the world of Fallout 3 been tempered from the earlier games?" and I can certainly say "No, it hasn't been." Is homosexuality one of the themes included under “most of those”? I’d like to think so, but I’m the cynical type who doesn’t want to order his post-apocalyptic same-sex wedding invitations until I know the event is happening, y’know? SOMEBODY CALL THE DOCTOR TO FIND THE FANBOY OF 1919 : Machinima, however, is not among the new additions to the dictionary. I guess that one will need time. SEQUENTIAL CHEFS:
I’m a sucker for food manga, so Ill be checking this one out. However, that got me thinging about how a good number of gay manga readers I know also seem to enjoy the genre – is there something gay about food manga? There’s certainly a bit of camp to how dramatic characters can get in titles like Iron Wok Jan or Yakitate Ja-Pan! and in the books’ outlandish plots … is that enough to give the genre some extra gay appeal? Are any AfterElton readers fans of food manga? BEAMING OUT:
I enjoyed Star Trek: The Experience for myself a few years back. I certainly enjoyed how they incorporated live performances to make both rides more than just a motion simulator – it’s pretty cool to have actors in Federation uniforms evacuate you off of the bridge of the Enterprise – but I didn’t see myself shelling out the admission price more than once. Afterwards, I wanted to get some neon-colored drink at Quark’s Bar but everything on the menu sounded like they’d give me an immediate toothache. As one of those gays who sometimes likes to escape to the spectacle of Vegas, I’m feeling a bit mixed on the news. As neat as it was to have a place where the spectacle was sci-fi themed, I don’t see myself missing it … what about the other gay geeks out there? Did you get to see the attraction? Will you miss it? ST - The Experience
Is it true...
I'm with you on DCUO
Yeah, there's quite a lot of
BTW, it's a double XP weekend! Whee! (There goes all those yard projects.)
Double XP weekend
Oops Lyle - slight correction - Double XP weekend is NOT this weekend!
This weekend is the Q-Pride Prom on the 13th, at I beleive 3:00 p.m. Pacific time.
NEXT weekend, the 18th - 20th is double XP weekend - I took Friday off just so I could level up a few lower level alts...! This is a big month for CoX...well, to me, anyway!

Oh drat...
Self-Correction!
I just checked, apparently the Q-Pride Prom is at 4:00 Pacific time!
That would be really cool, if they were the same weekend...BUT, at the same time, this is probably best. If it's double XP, I'd probably rather be out earning it than socializing. And I really want to socialize at the party! So that could be a bit distrcting if it was the same weekend.
I think it is for the best
I'd totally skip the prom for double xp! I'm going to try to get my second level 50 villain next weekend (already have two level 50 heroes). Of course, it sucks anyway because I think I'm going to have to miss the prom this weekend due to real life. I went last year and had a blast, and I even won a costume contest. You guys have fun for me!
Established Disestablishmentarian - You've seen worse
Honestly,
DCUO doesn't have to be as good as City of Heroes to keep my interest as it involves characters and settings that I already love. That's not to say that it can be awful, it'll just get more of a free pass on some things than other games would. For instance, Champions is going to have to really bring it for me to be impressed since it doesn't involve anything with which I'm familiar. But I'm going to be all over DCUO like insincerity on a politician!

The entire menu
http://www.startrekexp.com/pdf/quarks_menu.pdf
was a wealth of Star Trek puns. So much so, they made the menus oversized so people wouldn't steal them.
Sad, but when Paramount shed its theme parks division a few years ago, I expected this. It lasted longer than I expected.
ST: Exp
Er... I am the proud owner of one of those menus! The first time the BF and I adventured to Vegas (quite a few years ago), The Experience was the one thing that I wanted to do! The entire time we were there, I had this enormous shit-eating grin on my face... It is / was a great attraction. Whenever I go to Vegas I always manage to stop in, do the original ride, view the memorabilia, go to Quarks and peruse the gift shop.
Oh, as for the menu? I didn't steal it... I asked them if I could keep it and they said "sure"!
I heard this one story (it didn't happen to me) where a guy was in line for Quarks and one of the actors who worked the promenade in full Klingon regalia was entertaining the customers with tales and boasts and all.
Well this guy tells the Klingon that he's such a big fan of the show that he even got a tattoo of a Klingon Bird of Prey on his arm. Well of course the Klingon asked to see it and and the guy rolls up his sleeve and shows him his arm.
There wasn't anything on it though, and when the Klingon warrior asked him where it was the guy replied "it's cloaked!". Apparently the actor had to turn away and walk off because, I guess you aren't supposed to see a Klingon break out into tears of laughter...
DCU MMO, ST:Exp.
Great Geek Lyle!
Oohh, I'm certainly looking forward to DCU MMORPG...and just hoping it won't suck. If it doesn't suck, I'll probably be happy with whatever they do! But I hadn't thought that much about it yet - a 30th Century zone - that would be AWESOME! I love my Legions! 8) Oooh - maybe they'd also have a WWII zone for JSA types?
I'm kinda saddened that the Star Trek experience thing is going away...I've never been to Vegas, and really, I think that's just about the only thing that could have gotten me to go... oh, well!
Oh, and the food manga - What? I'm afraid that just this cursory mention does not give me any great desire to read it. I like my manga, but food or cooking themed ones would just be lost on me. Although the guy on the cover of that Yakitate Ja-Pan! one is drawn awfully cute!
Thanks for the great Geek!
Ooooh,
As for food manga... Yakitate! is very cute in how weird it is. It follows a boy who loves baking bread and takes up an apprenticeship in a prestigious bakery. Since he's self-taught, he comes off as ignorant but then it always turns out he's re-invented one type of bread or another and perfected it. The fun tho (like in Iron Wok Jan) is that everyone is so melodramatic. It's like if there were a drama set on the Iron Chef show but nearly all the characters had the personality of Chairman Kaga.
Firebrand & A*S!
Heh - I'm glad I remembered that abrreviation for the All-Star Squadron! 8)
I would LOVE tp play as/ with/ encounter any of the All-Stars, and especially Firebrand! I think she was the first superhero whose origin I 'witnessed' as it happened, and I think I had a bit of a crush on the lovely Danette...! In my fictional super-hero world, I have a grandson of her and Sir Justin playing hero...ah, if only I could write! 8)
Those manga you mentioned sound interesting, but I just don't think it's my personal cup of tea (I also don't watch Iron Chef or any cooking show - and I can't cook if there's no microwave - horrible I know!). But I love how you keep bringing up new and different mangas I've never read/ heard of - you give me something else to look for at the comic shop (as if my wallet needed that!).
Thanks Lyle!

Firebrand
Firebrand, gay?
8)
Actually, I think he did write in a few hints as to that somewhere. But keep in mind I haven't read those issues in some years now...and I too was fairly young when they came out and I read them over, so I probably missed a lot of the subtle points!
I think Danette mentioned something about Rod's pink see-through shirt, that she had to put a bathing suit under/ over. And then his, oh, manservant?, Dugger I think, was always around with him... Maybe there was more, but that's all I can think of right now.
There's definitely grounds for suspicion there!
Ah, good ol' All-Star memories!
The more mix that can be
The more mix that can be added to the MMORPG the better in my opinion - I get so sick of fantasy wizard storylines and half baked attempts at cyberpunk titles.
