Sooooo where's the gay in the "Fame" trailer?

We got all excited when we heard a few months back that a big reboot of the Fame franchise (the movie and show were kind of the grandparents of the High School Musical phenom, for you rugrats) and that, like the original film, it would include a central gay character amongst the cast of showbiz hopefuls.

So it was a bit disappointing to see the first full trailer for the movie (below) and not get a single hint of any kind of gay character or storyline. In fact, the only gay-ish moment comes as a punchline right at the beginning, when the faculty laughs off an auditioning student for being too queeny (above).

What gives, Fame? Check out the trailer below and see what you think...

Why

Why must they include it in the trailer. I don't get the objection. It's going to attract the gays because of the name itself and its got a great cast. Not every movie that has a central gay character needs to have them in the trailer.

Central is the key...

If they were serious about making him a central character with just as much screentime as the rest of the characters in the trailer, then he should also get equal representation in the trailer.

My bet is during the montage of cliche words that represent the movie, when they flashed friends and the trio of a girl and two guys... that right!  The one farther back is your gay character!  Another gay bestie to add to the list!!  I just love how we've been pigeon-holed, don't you?

I'm not sure how we were

I'm not sure how we were supposed to know which the gay character was.  Should we have been able to see the membership badge?  Or was he or she supposed to flash their gay card?

Yeah, we didn't see anyone saying "I'm gay!" but none of the characters shown were calling out "I'm straight!".

There are puh-lenty of things for us to rally about these days.  I can't see that this trailer is one of them.

I'm looking forward to the movie, yet also feeling trepidation.  LOVED the original in high school, and watched the tv series for the first couple of years.

Two guys holding hands

Didn't you guys see at the last shot there were two guys holding hands? :)

So, I am not crazy...

I watched the trailer last night and thought they exact same thing.  I dismissed my feelings at first for being too sensitive, but I am glad to see some folks at AfterElton agree.

I always find it ironic when these types of movies set in song and dance schools or communities work so hard to make the films break the stereotype about straight men not liking the performing arts that they actually forget to include more than one or any gay characters.  Ridiculous!

I am hoping the gay character is the hottie with his shirt.  Notice how he has his back to the near naked girl while all the other guys seem to be paired up with a person of the female persuasion.

Hope they haven't ruined it

Honestly, FAME is GAY no matter how many characters are. I just hope they didn't loose the character driven story line. All types of people from all types of backgrounds and beliefs growing into better individuals while coming together. That is what made the original a classic. Would I like to see realistic gay character represented? Ofcourse, it is a high school for performing arts. We all know that's like teen age gay mecca. I'll withhold judgements till I see it.

There he is,

If you think about it and remember the original film, the gay character is right there in the trailer.  Think about Paul Mcrane's Montgomery in the original film and P.R. Paul in the TV series.  They were both isolated by their feelings.  So how do contemporary kids isolate.  Check out the kid with the IPod ear phones.  My guess is Paul McGill (Kevin) is that kid.  They don't need to emphasized, "Hey, were gay inclusive."  Why ruin the story for those who have never seen the first film or don't remember much about the original, after all it was almost 30 years ago.  Let's hope the exuberance and enthusiasm of the actors is what carries the day.  Dean Pitchford won't win another Oscar for the title song.  But all those tweens want is another chance to sing and dance while their parents will think back on their lives when they had hopes and dreams of a bright future.  I smell a hit if the production values hold up., it sure looks good so far.

That's all I am saying...

There he is...

I thought it was also pretty clear when the teachers says "your darkest secrets.." and there's a cut to the latino kid standing in the snow. Maybe not

No need to get upset.

There is no need to get upset just yet. There did not seem to be any indication that the Gay man, if in fact he was gay, was ousted. They were just shocked at what he did. I think you may be happily surprised with the outcome of this one. casino en ligne
