"Stargate Universe" will feature two gay characters ... but which two?

The cast of Stargate Universe

Well here's some good news from the outer limits of gay representation...

Apparently the long-running Stargate franchise will finally be getting back to its gay-friendly roots (remember, these series were all based on a feature film starring the guy from The Crying Game as an androgynous god). But rather than bring back Ra, the new Stargate Universe series will feature a gay character.

And maybe not one, but two! Executive producers told a recent conference that there would be at least one (and then clarified that there would be two) gay character on the new show, saying that they wanted the Stargate Universe universe to reflect modern society and be accessible to as many viewers as possible. Well I've always argued that gays are better in pairs, so this is good news.

David Blue as Cliff on Ugly Betty

We'll let you know more details when we have them, but in the meantime, are there any guesses as to who the gay(s) might be, strictly from the first official cast photo above (and we should keep in mind that the character or characters could potentially be female and might not be in the central cast)? Considering that we're still smarting from his unceremonious exit from Ugly Betty, we're hoping for David Blue but not putting any money on it.

Guess away in the comments, and thanks to Aled for the tip! I'll also include the first official trailer for the show below. [Editor's update: A publicist for the show says the show will only have one GLBT character and declined to confirm the character's gender.]

Here's hoping

One of the things I've liked about Stargate as a television series is that it tended to be more accepting of actors of unconventional attractiveness. Yes, they were generally relegated to comic relief, but they were there and often central to the plots. It's nice to see that continue with David Blue. Hopefully he'll have more to do than sit around cracking wise.

I Couldn't.....

.... even begin to figure out who it could be at this point.  Only one of the main characters is married as the series begins, but even that doesn't mean anything.  I love sci-fi and I've watched most of the Stargate saga, so I'm looking forward to this new series as well.

I don't think it's David Blue though and I'd okay with that.  He's supposedly the show's comic relief and I have had enough of that role for the gay guy.

Screw you Mr.Gaeta! Looks

Screw you Mr.Gaeta! Looks like the US is geting its first 'mo in space who might actually be getting some (or even have the fact agnolaged) on the show itself!

Speaking of, that trailer makes it look ferce Battlestar Galactica-y. Not that i'm complaining.

Lorne and Dex almost were gay, too...

Yea! Good! Finally! Mo's go through the gate. I just hope that it's one of those things that's brought up one week and never mentioned again, except when the producers are angling for an inclusivity award.

I suspect though they're serious about this. According to the producers, they had a lot of talk around the writer's room and came quite close to making SG:A's Major Lorne gay. We'd find that out after he had an affair with Ronon Dex.

That's the stuff slash fiction is made of.

That's what I'm finding encouraging...

When I read about Major Lorne, I reacted to the "too bad we never got around to telling that story" talk by rolling my eyes. I've heard that before and, at this point, meaning to be inclusive (but never actually being inclusive) is pretty meaningless. However, those comments seem more sincere if they're carrying that intention to the next series.

Guess I'll have to brush up on the Stargate franchise.

Lyle, I'm hopeful, too. My

Lyle, I'm hopeful, too. My guess is that they are going to make one female character and one male character gay.

My concern is that the male character will be brainy and the female character will action-oriented, with a penchant for tight jumpsuits and large machine-guns, and will find several other female guests of the week curious to explore "this human concept of sex." The male character will stare out the window a lot and think of home.

I'm hoping I'm wrong and we get two well rounded characters who are smart and action oriented and get laid about as much as everyone else.

I'm a dreamer, though.

Hah! I knew it! I knew Lorne

Hah! I knew it! I knew Lorne was the hinted-at-to-be-gay-but-they-never-got-around-to-it character!

It would almost have to be a guy

I looks at that cast photo, and I've got to think it's guys who gay in that.  If that's really as big as the cast is, on an isolated space ship never to return to earth, if the gay characters were lesbians, it just leaves on available female for any romantic interludes for all six guys - which in addition to making lone female seem a slut, it would be awfully destructive to the crew dynamics.  Make the gays dudes, and you end up with a mostly balanced male/female-male/male dynamic.  But if they intend to couple the gays up, there's really not a lot of choices if they want to match the ages remotely - and while I've met some sexy May/December couples in my life, going too much older/youger (and a few of those guys look awfully young for high-level interstellar government work in hte first place), I can imagine some people getting their panties in twist on the predatory age thing.  Personally, I think it might be kind fun and hot.

Why Would Age Be An Issue?

The guy in the white  t-shirt (the actor is 26)  and the guy in the royal blue t-shirt (the actor is 27) are the youngest dudes.

I can't imagine that their characters would be much younger given their position on the crew.

The other 3 dudes are between 40 and 47

I don't know the actual ages of the characters but based soley upon looks, they all some very grown to me.

I don't get why there woud be controversy.

DADT

Not all the characters are in the military obviously, but do you think Stargate would want to tackle Don't Ask Don't Tell?  I mean they've gone into military relationships with O'Neil and Carter, but do you think that they would try to take something on that's such a controversial topic.  If they do I hope they don't mess it up. If you think they'd avoid it that helps narrow things down a bit.

Why Not

Why not Robert Carlyle as the gay one. I for one will never ever forget watching The Full Monty. I was one of a lucky few who got to preview the movie before it was released at a theater in Riverside California. They passed out tickets at a coffee shop I frequented that was next door to the Menagerie a local gay bar. Me and a couple of friends were bored so we took the tickets and saw the movie. We could not wait to get back to the bar and tell everyone of the movie. The rest is history.

Sounds good

But a Stargate without Daniel, Jack, Rodney, John and Carson? What will all the slash writers do?

Craig Young's picture

It has a really great cast

I recognize several of the actors there. All of them are really good. Can't wait.

Mr.Carlyle.....

if were going on who may have played gay before well the safe money is on the outstanding robert carlyle!!! From a european side of the things he was in a film called Priest rated 18's if i remember, he was priests lover and it was certainly explicit at the time. He's done it once could easily do it again and with more class now he's older......

people should smile more!!!

Another one?

What's with all these "guess who's gay" lately?  First, Kings, then Southland, and now this?

In a perfect world . . .

I'm glad that one of my favorite franchises has finally decided to join the 21st century, but I just can't help but think how much nicer it would have been if they'd arrived at this decision twelve years ago when they cast Michael Shanks as Daniel Jackson.

That man is just entirely too hot to be wasted on women! No offense, ladies. ;Þ

one man, one woman

I agree with the one's a man, the other is a woman theory. That way they

a) are inclusive and

b) never have to show same-sex action.

Hopefully I'm too cynical for my own good.

As a long-time fan and

As a long-time fan and follower of the Stargate franchise, this comes as great news to me.

However, the reaction from the fans on Gateworld greatly disappoints me. 19.94% (74 users) have insofar voted that they absolutely do mind that there will be gay characters on the show (http://forum.gateworld.net/showthread.php?p=10020412), and the poll was started even before the PTB announced there would be actual gay characters on the show, so many of these people were voting against hypothetical homosexuality. I'm FallenAngelII on Gateworld, BTW. I posted a post on page 29.

Stargate Universe goes lesbian route

And thanks to a casting notice, we find out that Stargate Universe, with all those males, chooses to go the lesbian route.  We still have no gays in space.

im gonna say ......

well i already know one as it in my mag as a spoiler but if it was two .... im hoping Lt matt. scott,

OR BI please, sadly bi people do exist (been hurt by a few, maybe more then a few, i can say that)

but here where i have a problem is as far as i can rememebr that SG has never done a gay story ever in either universes (u may correct me if im a wrong .. im a star trek buff not SG .... but i know them both well .. if that makes sence ..... so it be hard to push out two gay people onto one show .....

unless u do so where they can go to a planet with no sex gender at all however imply by looks it a female/male .. and allow the charater to well enter into a relationship that implyes homosexuality rather then shows (which they did in first contact startrek TNG).... other then the lying in bed kiss goodbye u get on a normal st8 scene ....

R.C- fantastic actor and is brillent in the film priest (check it out) but however no he tooo ugly as a gay man however micheal shanks is another story ... see that link i did there clever huh :P x
