Neil Patrick Harris takes brave stand against heterosexual Tonys hostsLast night NPH appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman to read the Top Ten, which outlined ways you could tell that you've hired a bad host for The Tony Awards. In yet another example of how the out actor has managed to incorporate his open gayness into his public persona without getting on a soapbox about it, NPH topped the list with a wink-wink gay joke, while tossing in a few other personal jabs (including a particularly funny dig at Emmy foe Jeremy Piven). Pretty awesome. Go NPH! Submitted by on Fri, 2009-06-05 09:35. |

NPH for President!
He can do no wrong
Seriously, he's funny in everything he does. Just watched his segment on The View, and he managed a 30-second summary of their entire Hot Topics segment, including commenting on Archie marrying Veronica, and that being further proof that Jughead might be gay, done with an elegant hand gesture and sound effect. He just seems so comfortable with himself.
Honestly, as I don't get to NYC often, I have no interest in the Tony Awards, but I'm tuning in on Sunday just for Neil.
NPH....
He's really amazing and smart .
I love this guy
OMG...
amusing
he's amusing. i won't watch the awards though, only because i don't know anything about broadway....i see a broadway play like once a year but thats it. not a fanatic.
i did see RENT and i'm taking a risk here....and couldn't stand it. I was bored to...well, i went in and out of sleep. even to this day, i try so hard to like something about it.
i know it's popular with lgbt folks, so i so feel bad in a sense i don't like it. does anyone else not like it? i cant be the only one.
Give them a chance
Don't skip the Tonys because you "don't know anything about Broadway." They're a great crash course in current Broadway shows. You get performances from the nominated shows, which really help in deciding what shows to see. This year's Tonys especially are geared towards "non-Broadway" people. There are going to be performances by Poison, Liza Minelli, and Dolly Parton (and possibly Elton John? I can't remember).
As for Rent, it's a show people love or hate. Personally, I think it depends on the cast you saw. With some recent casts, I can see how you'd walk away disappointed. Give it another chance, if the tour comes near you, and get the $20 front row tickets. But it's definitely not a show for everyone, GLBT or not. It was pretty groundbreaking when it opened for its handling of GLBT and AIDS-related issues, but nowadays it can be difficult that.
yeah...
Really?
I don't think it's depressing at all; I love how the characters have so many problems, but manage to celebrate their lives and each other nonetheless. Or maybe I just love the cheer, "To sodomy-- it's between God and me!"
That being said, you don't have to feel bad about not liking it! It's certainly not a litmus test for musical taste. :) In fact, I know a lot of people who think it's tacky and obnoxious.
"Go, or go ahead and surprise me." -- Rufus Wainwright
well, thanks...
i once was having a discussion about this with a few people and they all looked at me in disgust and asked if i was truly gay or if i simply felt like insulting them. "how can you not like RENT? it is a huge part of our culture, blah blah blah blah...you dont know who you are, you're messing with the wrong people..."
it was brutal.
Rent Overdue
I love the Tony Awards and have been lucky enought to attend them twice and they out do the Oscars by a mile. They are a great and very inclusive of everyone in the community from stars to the public. They are far more inspiring to young people than the films which create a wall between the actors and the audience. Don't get me wrong, I love movies too, but for diffrent reasons. There is something exciting about the interaction between humans that you only get in the theater. You won't get that experience by watching the the Tony's on television but it will open you up to the idea of wanting that experience.
I think of two great musicals that failed at the movie boxoffice because they were better with the intimacy of the live theater, CHORUS LINE and RENT. I am not a fan of RENT either, I have my doubt if it would be the hit became had not Jonathon Larson not died so sudenly as it was opening. It gave the show a level of tragedy that gave it a deeper truth people could find very relatable, especially among younger people who are trying to make sense of their lives and where they are going.
In any case, we ned to support live theater, people say it is dying, but it is still quite alive and breaking new ground all the time. Who would have imagined SHOWBOAT to OKLAHOMA, to HAIR, to NEARLY NORMAL, a muiscal about schizophrenia? Or the giants of literature that just American theater has produced such as: Eugene O'Neill, Tennessee Williams, William Inge, and Edward Albee.
That is all I am saying...

Tonys
Don't skip the Tonys because you "don't know anything about Broadway." They're a great crash course in current Broadway shows. You get performances from the nominated shows, which really help in deciding what shows to see.
Except that for the vast majority of the country (and the world), we won't going to Broadway at all, so helping us select what shows we won't be seeing isn't that big a draw. I know NPH said that they're trying to make the Tonys a big deal like the Oscars, Emmys, or Grammys, but those of us not based in or near NY can easily watch/rent/buy those winning performances. The Tonys are basically NY trying to rub it in the faces of those of us Out In The Sticks, and while they might be able to draw some eyes with spectacle for a year or two, its always going to be for reasons other than the country actually caring about what's on Broadway.
And, to whatever degree I still want to see Poison perform, I'd rather see them perform in a venue I care about. Heck, they could have done a Poison tv concert, and instead of drawing in Poison fans minus people who don't want anything to do with Broadway, they could have just drawn in the Poison fans.
And it's a strange world where Liza Minelli is supposed to draw in non-Broadway fans.
Yes
Speaking of which...
Speaking of which, I never got my free toaster.
I've moved to, do I need to send in a change of address card?
NPH scores once again.
Honestly, has anyone ever known him to fail? He's simply the most awesomest person around right now.
People that actually whistle while they work deserve what they get.
Will...
NPH rules!
NPH totally stole the show
with that finale number a few minutes ago. I have not been a huge fan either, but I am completely falling in like with him.
Everyone in NYC knows that the Tonys are our gay Oscars and most people outside of the tri-state area probably skips them, but you really can learn a lot about the quality of passionate, live performance and dancing that nobody else can duplicate. Combine with Sir Elton, Liza, Dolly, and NPH and how can you go wrong?
Couldn't get any gayer
