Hit-or-Miss Marvel: How to contact the comics publisher regarding Orson Scott Card and other concerns

There's been a lot of static around here lately about comics publishing giant Marvel's handling of gay themes and issues. If you checked out the recent mainpage editorial about outspoken (vitriolic?) anti-gay author Orson Scott Card, you may be disappointed to learn that in addition to their adapting his novel Ender's Game as a comic book series, the publisher put the writer in charge of the recent Ultimate Iron Man miniseries.

Additionally, recent developments in both the Ultimate X-Men (with gay characters Northstar and Colossus) and Young Avengers (with gay superheroes Hulking and Wiccan) series have gay comics fans appalled and at the treatment of the few gay characters that comics have to offer.

One reader points out that Marvel has generally had a fairly gay-friendly past, so perhaps bringing these points to their attention would do some good. If you'd care to contact them, here's the information. To contact the Ultimate editors directly, here's their email. And here's Editor in Chief Joe Quesada's Myspace page.

    Young Avengers?

Okay, I know some stuff's been going on in Ultimate X-men that doesn't sound too good, but that's 'Ultimate', and I just wait for the tpb on those.

But what about Young Avengers?  Something bad has happened, esp. to Wiccan or Hulkling?  The last time I saw them in their spotlighted issues of Young Avengers Presents, or in the Secret Invasion Young Avengers/ Runaways, I thought their portrayals and exposures were just fine.  Did I miss something here?

Thanks for any heads up!  8)

    I don't think Card has

I don't think Card has worked on any ongoing titles. Ultimate Iron Man was a mini-series, and a second one is in the works.
Not that I'm trying to defend Marvel. I'd like to see what would happen if they worked with a writer who was openly racist or antisemitic.

    He wasn't involved with either

As far as I know, he wasn't involved in either UX or YA. Neither comic BTW portrayed gays etc. in a negative way. It should also be noted that UX is an "alternate universe" of the comic, so it's like that season of "Dallas" that was just a dream.

    Change of wording

Didn't mean to suggest that he was involved in those two titles - they are separate situations both involving Marvel. I've changed the wording to make it more clear.

    Ultimates Ending

.......I realize that once again, MARVEL has screwed ove NORTHSTAR (and COLOSSUS) but I cant get too worked up about it because (as u know)..the ULTIMATE Universe is about to go the way of all of the other MARVEL alternate universes ( Ultraverse, New Universe and 2099 Universe). Marvel has stated that they will be ending the entire ULTIMATES line of titles.........sad but true. Funny too because in the NEW UNIVERSE there was a gay character there as well (Spectrum from THE STRANGERS) as well as a supporting gay teen in the ULTRAVERSE title PRIME.

    comic limbo

i'm sorry dos it really matter if it happend in the ultimate U or not.

I could have lived with Northstar's death,i was sad to see him go but in action comics people die.But to have him killed one mounth and his boyfriend the next also the way they have Collosus die is totally brutal(they cut out his freaking hearth) and this is done by Wolverine the best known mutant out there.

To me thats more than just killing them its a statement and it sayed loud and clear to all gayreaders "NOT WELCOME".

Now i'm all for artistic freedom, but it would also seem that this artistic freedom dos not extend to writers who wanna have gay hero's kiss or even show affection because that has never happend in any of marvel's comics.(this is probably also the reason why Alan Heinberg will not write more YA)

I'm just pissed of under Mark Miller and especially Brian K. Vaughan these gay hero's where respected and where a part of the team, then Kirkman stept in and he kicked them of the team and for 2 years there where no gay hero's in UXM, now that they are finally back they are butchered off.

as for young avengers i live in Europe so i'm always behind on issue's but the last time i seen them Hulkling and Xavin(from runaways who is a guy changed into a woman to please his lesbian girlfriend,so also sorta gay :) ) where bouth unconscious and had a gun to there head.

ooh and thx for the links i will surtanly make use of them.

    JoeQ pronounced Joke

No matter how many of us complain to Joe Quesada, it won't change their internal policies.

I suspect that the word came down from corporate(via Dan Buckley) that all gay characters would be put out of commission, in-story or out.

Hell, DC Comics is keeping the gay Batwoman out of her own series. I think. Originally, Batwoman was going to have her own series. Now, I think, she's just a guest star in one of the Bat-Books. Of course, Warner-Brothers had everything to do with that decision.

    New Marvel Announcement

Marvel just solicited a new 5 issue comics series of Ender's Game.  I won't buy it, and I recommend the same to others (including any other comics by Orson).  I also will put Marvel on notice that I do find this reflective of the company's ethics and plan to reduce other purchases.  It's a good time to stop buying their other $3.99 priced comics.  (Good comics can be bought at $2.99.)  Thanks, Brian, for posting both of the pages on this subject....
