"Being Human": Out actor Russell Tovey brings his hairy buns back to telly

Sadly, this news is only for our friends overseas (did you catch the subtle use of "telly" in the headline? I'm a pro, see...): Adorable out actor Russell Tovey (The History Boys) will be back on BBC3 when his show Being Human, in which he plays a werewolf, kicks off this Sunday.

The show ran a while back as a pilot, and is now returning for a full series. Interestingly, Tovey is the only of the three central actors from the pilot to return (the others play a ghost and a vampire). We're certainly thrilled to have him back and are very much looking forward to the "lots of nude transforming scenes" referenced in this recent interview.

For the uninitiated, a few more pics of Tovey (including a few mildly NSFW shots from the pilot) follow ...

That's great news

About a year or so ago, the BBC used BBC3 (one of its minority digital channels) to try out six stand-alone plays that might be commissioned as drama series. All of them were bold, strong, stylish, original examples of drama that deserved a bigger audience. If they stick to the strong writing of the pilot drama, I can see Being Human getting a far wider viewership because apart from the cult appeal, it's sure to be moved to BBC2 (mainstream minority channel) and thence to BBC Worldwide. So the chances are that Being Human will cross the Atlantic some time soon.

One of the other plays that definitely could do with becoming a series was 'Mrs In-Betweeny', which could have been a thoroughly nasty, crass piece of work. Except it was created by Paul Abbott (the guy behind Shameless and probably the strongest and best television writer of at least his generation) and had an incredibly strong cast. The storyline there was of a mother who dies in a crash and leaves her home and children to her long-lost brother, not knowing that he's had a sex-change. Like I said, it could have been awful, but it was exceptionally good with strong characters, great writing, a wonderful plot, committed actors and a lot of very funny moments. If the BBC gets round to commissioning that as well, I'm pretty sure it would become an AfterElton fave.

Finally!

I've been waiting for this to start since I saw the pilot a few month ago, which is grate and you should totally check it up (it's on YouTube, here's the link to the first part) I kind of fall in love with Tovey watching this and I'm so happy they kept him on the project. what can I say,I had a thing for nerdy looking guys (although I also like hairy masculine men, and sensitive ones, and..., you know what let's say that I just like men in general -there's no need to be picky-).

Great news!

I recently saw him in a Miss Marple episode and the guy is just so adorable. It was about time this show started.

Being Human

Saw the pilot a little while ago, and it was great! Can't wait to see more of it, and I'm glad to hear Russel Tovey will continue on the show!

Harvey Milk: You gotta give 'em hope.

it's a shame

... they replaced his co-stars.  They were very good in the pilot. IMHO

Little Dorrit

was Little Dorrit shown on BBC America? Tovey was soooo adorable in it (not naked though...). I would highly recommend it - if you like period drama, that is.

I'm surprised werewolves don't have more of a gay following

A friend (?!?!) of mine gave me "Curse of the QueerWolf" a couple years ago for my birthday; let's just say it wasn't very good and leave it at that.

Seriously, though: you've got gay or homo-erotic vampires all over the place (Lestat and Louis, "True Blood," "The Lost Boys" "The Lair" "Dante's Cove"), but how many serious gay-themed werewolf stories have you encountered?  And isn't there something vaguely hot about a man losing complete control to the point where he's gasping and almost screaming, ripping out of his clothes, and growing extra hair?  (Am I the ONLY one who got the psychosexual charge in David Naughton getting naked and hirstute in "An American Werewolf in London"?)

I say we take the warning labels off everything and let nature take it's course.

I LOVED that movie and not just because

David Naughton kept waking up naked different places. Okay, that played a big part, but I still enjoyed it for other reasons.

Great Pilot!

After hearing about this show here, I went on YouTube and found the whole pilot and really enjoyed it! Then i found some of the promo items for the new series. It looks like the first show redos the pilot so that the new actors get to get into their character's skin. There is also a "origin" item for each! The ghost and werewolf ones are very Blair Witch. Anyway, this looks like it might be a winner although when I told friends about the premise they thought I was telling a joke. lol

i really love AfterElton!!!

i really love you AE guys for introducing me to such great shows and gay artists like Forbidden Love, Shelter, Michael Arden, ATWT (pre-'meera), Torchwood... and now Being Human. It was such an interesting show. it even has the potential to be a brilliant series.... i am sooo looking forward for the 2009 series.

and by the way - Epsiode 1 of the second series just started and can be seen on the BBC3 website. i am also bummed that the Annie and Mitchell's original actors did not reprise their roles but i'm glad to report that i thought the new actor playing Annie was also marvelous (although she gave annie a new dimension) and Mitchell was also interesting although i thought the original actor was more... umm... "vampire-like" ... i don't know how to describe it... but the new one was good, too. but ofcourse, the highlight of the show is Tovey. he is such a brilliant actor. one minute he's the heart of the series, the next he's the comic-relief - he is so adorable (and yummy!) . i am now a fan. thank you again AE!!!!!

hmmm.... i wonder...

has anyone pitched this brilliant idea (of three twenty something outcasts - a werewolf, a vampire and a ghost sharing a flat) to LOGO? and make the Vampire and the Werewolf ACTUALLY gay and constantly have sexual tensions but cannot really consumate their love because they both know that they are of two different worlds... and ofcourse the Ghost would be the fag hag.. i mean - the fairy princess.... wouldn't that be a good series for LOGO or HERE! ?!?! and can they give the wereworlf super human powers the other 29/30 days of the month? i mean - i know it's part of the "charm' of the character but i just don't want him to be powerless against the vampires in a moonless night.

Not usually my cup o tea

Sci-fi and the supernatural don't usually do it for me, but I found the first episode on BBC America last Saturday really well done.  I am so glad they replaced Mitchell and Annie actors; I thought he was too skinny and could hardly understand a word of the original Annie.  Tovey is the core of the show and can do no wrong in my book.  My Tyvo is set for the whole series.  But why does BBC America feel a need to 'fuzz' his butt?  We can see plenty of bare asses on most cable shows, finally!
