Btw:
This gets quite a new meaning considering it's Tovey they're talking about.
How Awesome?
"how awesome would it be to have an openly gay actor playing Doctor Who?"
Unless they re-write the character to be an openly gay Doctor, it wouldn't be any more or less 'awesome' than if Robert Carlyle (my hopeful choice for the next Doctor) gets the role. I just don't see how being openly gay would make Russell Tovey any better or worse as The Doctor.

What is with Barrowman's
An out gay actor playing The Doctor
Remember how The Doctor comes from the 51st century and his 6th millennium sensibility is very evolved - in other words, during the show in his various incarnations, he does not blink twice at gay or lesbian couples or individuals he encounters in his travels, and accepts it completely when Captain Jack kisses him or when Jack chats up a male hottie. So having a talented out gay actor play the role of such an accepting 51st century character would be great. Doctor Who is an iconic sci-fi character, after all.
I think it's only Captain
I think it's only Captain Jack that comes from the 51st century, not the Doctor.
But having an openly gay actor playing what is one of the best known characters in mainstream tv would be great.
I can't help thinking of Davies saying that he wanted to push the visibility of gay characters (and gay actors) on Doctor Who, when he invented Captain Jack.

Russell Tovey
Couple of points
Couple of points: RTD mentioned Tovey's name for the part in passing, having been rightly and suitably impressed with his work on the Christmas special. The British mejuh have pounced on it and, as always, have taken it out of all proportion. Once the specials being filmed to broadcast in 2009 have been filmed that's it, RTD is moving on. He's stressed he'll have no more involvement with Who, either as an exec or writer. Word has it Moffat - his replacement, is already assembling his team of writers for season five in 2010. So any question of Tennant's replacement if and when one is required, will not be in RTD's hands. (Incidentally: rumour control has it RTD's next big TV project is a straightforward drama that's NOT straight. Hooray)
There's a lot of speculation about 'Being Human' getting commissioned as a series. There's no guarantee Tovey will sign on if it does go ahead, but I reckon his involvement might be one of the conditions that it goes into production. So don't get too sad, mate. Naked barking at the moon might not be off the agenda. Okey-doke?
Oh and, Tovey's better looking in the flesh than he is on screen. Much.
Russell Tovey is just
Russell Tovey is just sooooo cute!Yum!Hopefully we will get more talented young actors like him to come out proudly at an early stage of their career.
Plus,Marco Da Silva is also openly into boys(I think he`s bi cause he mentioned he was & still is attracted to girls).Anyone who wants to know more about him could check out his blog:

He is also one of Ms. Kylie Minogue`s favourite dancer and was on several of her past tours.I recommend the Showgirl Tour DVD,some VERY HOT stuff. He is also going to be on south america & australia leg of Kylie`s X2008 Tour.I believe he will quit dancing as profession and start to do more DJ stuff after this,so it might be our last chance to see him as a dancer on stage.I`m gonna miss him so much.(sob)
Gay Doctor?
The Doctor's sexuality has never been part of the show. Sure, he's in love with Rose, but he was equally happy to accept a kiss from Jack. Just like Jack, perhaps people from other times, as well as other planets, don't think in terms of gender preferences.
