AfterElton Briefs: No shirt Sherlock, Rupert Everett needs a hug and more!

Robert Downey Jr. in the upcoming Sherlock Holmes

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • Robert Downey Jr. suggests that the gay is afoot in the upcoming Sherlock Holmes movie, in which he shares a bed with Watson (Jude Law) and wrestles shirtless. I always knew Watson was a cuddler!
  • Out actor Raul Esparza (late of the late Pushing Daisies) will play a shady DA on an upcoming episode of Law & Order (which, I was amazed to learn, is still on the air).
  • Out actor Leslie Jordan (Will & Grace, Sordid Lives) will be bringing his one-man show My Trip Down the Pink Carpet to Off-Broadway after a successful LA run.

  • George Mason University (in Washington DC) picked a gay man and drag performer from the senior class to be their Homecoming Queen. Ryan Allen lauded his school's willingness to embrace diversity and vote him into the throne.

And today's Briefs are brought to you by...

This guy!

Rupert Everett

Rupert,

Film producers only put up with self-absorbed divas when they're a guaranteed box-office draw. As you are not a guaranteed box-office draw, there is no need for them to put up with your self-important attitude on a daily basis. Get over yourself and you might start getting work again.

i was kinda scared..

that the school (George Mason U) was trying to make a political statement.  i thought that it would be nice if it were a non-issue and that (s)he was voted because (s)he was truly deserving.  and after reading it, my fear turned into joy.  the campus didn't even think it was an issue.  they are our future.  i guess this is what harvey meant - "HOPE"

Washington Post article about GMU's Homecoming Queen

There was an article about Ryan Allen in the Washington Post on Friday with the headline "Work That Tiara!"  The article suggested that Allen's election as homecoming queen divided the campus.  A sophmore interviewed for the article was quoted as saying, "it’s really annoying. All eyes were on us. And we do something like this? It’s just stupid."

Ricky Malebranche, who was voted homecoming king, had this to say on the Connect2Mason site:

"I think people are making this into something much bigger than necessary. I think it does not reflect badly on the school because it was just a matter of Ryan getting more of his friends to vote for him.  [Allen’s win] did show that Mason will hold true to being a diverse campus even when things become controversial and that to me is something to be proud of."

Angela Lansbury

She looks amazing for 83. Glad to read she's on stage again.

Edit: Shame on you for cutting of her head in the teaser version of the photo.  Ever heard of resizing?

Just as a matter of

Just as a matter of perspective - immediately following the release of Dostana, there were discussions of Gay Rights Movements in India gaining ground, and further - those that were pre-established - gaining great momentum. Merely weeks after the debut, no such luck. We still have a very far way to come in the future.

Singapore censored Dustin Lance Black as well

The following is a report, from yesterday, from a good friend of mine in Singapore, recounting much the same experience:

"The Academy Awards were shown on Singapore TV this evening, a taped broadcast that followed the live telecast this morning. The two telecasts were almost similar with one glaring exception. The acceptance speech by Dustin Lance Black, who won for Best Original Screenplay for the movie "Milk" was aburbtly cut. A quick online check showed the reason - the speech had been censored by MediaCorp TV because of Black's comments about gays.

Sadly, this sort of censorship is nothing new in Singapore, where the media are fined by the ironically-named Media Development Authority, for any programme that "promotes or encourages homosexuality." Just a few months ago, The MDA fined Mediacorp for showing a gay couple's home in a show on interior decor."

Imagine the Bravo line-up without any "positive" depiction of gays!
