AfterElton Briefs: Fox puts "Sit Down Shut Up" in detention, Chad Allen's undies and more!

Brian Sims was the captain of the Bloomsburg University football teammates when he came out to his team in 2000.

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • Miss California once hung with Amanda Lepore. This is news why?

  • Speaking of Miss California, the AP has a story about Perez Hilton wanting to be like Oprah, only bigger. You'll find your airsick bag in the seat pocket in front of you. In the interview, Perez says:

I don't consider myself a celebrity because for every two people that like me, there's probably 3 1/2 that don't. And I don't care if you don't like me — I just care if you still read my Web site.

Just 3 1/2 people? Hmm, but yay for everyone who doesn't like Perez and doesn''t read his website.

  • indieWIRE examines Queer Identity and Aesthetics. Perez would've done the same but he's looking for someone else to call a bitch.

  • Simon Cowell sings (no, not literally) Adam Lambert's praises.

  • At least one Buddhist monk in Thailand is so concerned about "effeminate monks", he's teaching an etiquette course to solve the "problem."

And today's briefs are brought to you by ...

This guy!

Thanks to Made in Brazil for turning us on to this pic!

Regarding the Buddhist story...

I think that you are being too harsh. After reading the article, it seems like the monk is more worried about other monks who are not staying true to their religion (not living modest and celibate lifes) and not about monks being gay. In the buddhist religion you need to first realize that there is suffering, that suffering is caused by desire (Tanha), that when one 'lets go' of desire one can reach Nirvanna, and to follow the 8 fold path (practices that help one cool down and  extinguish  the flames of desire in order to reach Nirvanna). The artcile mentions that monks have not been following the 8 fold path by buying expensive cars, having sex, and running money making schemes.

However, it does seem that this monk has a bias against monks who wear tight robs, where make-up, and who carry purses. In his defense, all of those actions would draw attention to oneself, something which would violate the 8 fold path. By violating this 8 fold path, you are impending your move towards Nirvanna, which is the whole point of being a buddhist (the article also mentions that the etiquette lessons will also address drinking, smoking, and walking to the bathroom right). So, it would seem that the monk is worried about them not leading modest lives (free of tanha), not about the fact that they are gay or transgendered.

Thumbs up Andrew

Thumbs up for looking beyond the gay-bait that the AE author took and regurgitated to stir trouble and instead examining the actual motivator behind the monk's training course.

A few more like you and we might make actual headway in getting along as human beings instead of empty-headed flapping about diversity why practicing wedge relations.

And on Perez, now that I know he cares most if people are reading his site, I'm pleased I stop reading him years ago.

On the other hand...

Interestingly enough, I would bet that if a Christian priest or a Muslim cleric were stifling individuality in this way, we might be hearing an entirely different reaction.  However, because this discriminatory course is being taught by a follower of one of the trendier Eastern religions, we get a rather weak defense of the practice peppered with flowery language and references to irrelevant and incorrectly transliterated Sanskrit words.  What strikes me as important, however, is the caption under the picture accompanying the article in question, "It is customary for Thai men to enter the monkhood for training at least once." Replace "Thai" with "American" and "monkhood" with "Catholic seminary" and perhaps the problem is a little clearer.

Buddhism may resonate with Westerners who find it intriguing, but it is, in Thailand at least, a rather sexist religion, and unnaturally obsessed with what we do with our bodies.  The current Dalai Lama (admittedly an icon of Tibetan Buddhism, not Thai) has a well-meaning Western following of almost Mother Teresa-like zeal, but like that hypocritical and small-minded woman he demonstrates that "sacred knowledge," i.e. that 8 fold path gibberish mentioned above, is all too often merely uninformed and obsolete garbage masquerading as fortune cookie wisdom.  On homosexuality, the Dalai Lama is rather tolerant but still annoyingly preoccupied with the physical act: "A sexual act is deemed proper when the couples use the organs intended for sexual intercourse and nothing else... Homosexuality, whether it is between men or between women, is not improper in itself.  What is improper is the use of organs already defined as inappropriate for sexual contact."  Very enlightening indeed.

Quick to judge?

Ummm, No. I try to treat all religions the same when evaluating them. Also, Christianity is not anti-gay, the followers of Christianity are. Some Christians like to manipulate the Bible and make it seem as if gays are heathens. In the end, I could really care less because I am an atheist. Also, I said that he was being too harsh, not that he wasn't right. Obviously this monk has a bias towards gays, however, some of the things the monks have been doing goes against the whole living a modest life thing (like stealing cars and what not). I was just giving some background on Buddhism and showing that the monk is not completely motivated by his anti-gay beliefs.

sacrilege

Could anything possibly be more sacrilegious than having "effeminately-shaped eyebrows," which is what this Buddhist Monastery wants to stamp out?

Clearly, the Buddhist term for homophobia in Thailand is "good manners".
