AfterElton Briefs: Barrowman and Spacey defend their turfs, "Naomi and Ely" head for the screen, and more!

What, no unicorn? Neil Patrick Harris (we think?) in the first Dr. Horrible teaser

In a continued effort to bring you all that is important in the world of gay entertainment and ensure that you are being spoon-fed images of gorgeous, commoditized manflesh, we present the newly-minted AfterElton Briefs. Following the usual assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • Responding to Kevin Spacey's disparaging comments about the new reality show that looks to cast an upcoming UK production of Oliver!, judge John Barrowman says, "You know what, shut up!" Thank you, John. We've been wanting to say the same thing to him for years!
  • This week's How I Met Your Mother made a cute reference to star Neil Patrick Harris's career-launching role in Doogie Howser ... including that damned blue screen!
  • The gay-and-galpal novel Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List is being developed as a vehicle for Heroes' Hayden Panettiere. Let's just hope Ely fares better than her last gay BFF!

Australian Gladiator and gay-adjacent porn star Sam Brodie
  • Look! Our American Gladiators aren't the only ones with "gay porn pasts" (or as I prefer, "gay-adjacent porn pasts"): A recently-ousted Australian Gladiator has been uncovered as having posed for a gay website. Guess who's shocked? Nobody.
  • Michael Ausiello has some scoop on a gay kiss coming up in an upcoming Grey's Anatomy episode that deals with two gay soldiers: He notes, "Interested thesps must be Caucasian, hot and be comfortable sharing a 'very romantic kiss' with another dude."

And today's Briefs are brought to you by...

Brazilian model Rodolfo Cardoso!

    I have to say.....

Kevin Spacey doesn't come off looking all that great after his comments...but that doesn't mean he's wrong.  Reality Programming is the scourge of television.

    At least IMHO.

Don't trouble yourself Doctor -- I'm a celebrity, I'll write my own prescription.

Spacey? Too old to play Oliver, too goyish to play Fagin

But just right to play Nancy!

    I don't see what's so bad

I don't see what's so bad about Spacey's comments. I mean, aren't those shows pretty much plugs for that hack ALW? I love John Barrowman, but I have to say I'd take Kevin Spacey over him any day.

    I agree about taking Kevin

I agree about taking Kevin over Andrew but John Barrowman has a point.  Whether or not it's a vehicle for ALW to take over the world, it still brings theater into the home.  It promotes the whole medium.  The only problem I see is that people would probably rather watch a musical than the plays that Kevin produces in his theater.

    I applaud Grey's . . .

. . . for their efforts if the gay soldier storyline actually happens. But I am a little disappointed that a show that's been praised for its diversity would be seeking actors who are "Caucasian, hot and . . . comfortable sharing a 'very romantic kiss' with another dude."

I realize there is a relative dearth of gay characters on network television as it is, but for the most part they are played by actors that fit the above description. As interesting as it would be to explore this on episodic TV, it seems an added dimension could be presented if the planned characters were of a different race or cultural background than we're used to seeing. But I guess baby steps are still steps.

I am a fan of the show and look forward to this storyline (especially since Joe the Bartender and his partner [who is Asian-American from what I remember . . . it's been SO LONG] have been pushed way into the background) as well as the return of fresh episodes. We'll see what happens.

The truth is not always pretty . . . but it's still the truth.

    I don't watch Grey's, but

I don't watch Grey's, but from what I understand the bartender's Asian partner has gotten very little in the way of screen time (as with the overwhelming majority of Asian TV characters, gay or straight).  So Grey's shouldn't be immune from criticism for its myopic casting call.  What, minorities can't be "hot and comfortable sharing a 'very romantic kiss with another dude"?

But since gay-produced media has been quite poor in including minorities, I guess I shouldn't expect straight media to be any better.

The ad for the gay soldiers

The ad for the gay soldiers seems terribly inaccurate unless policies have changed on the Grey's set since Marti Noxon took over. Back in the day when Shonda Rhimes was setting the show up she was very very proud of the fact that the roles, including major guest stars, were all colour blind casted. The result, for example, is that Sandra Oh plays Christina, who is from a Jewish household. Burke was never particularly meant to be black and so on. Meredith could easily have ended up a Native American - Latino mixed lady! It would terribly dissapoint me if this policy has changed on the set. Hey Marti! Please please please restore colour-blind casting to your scripts.

    You make a good point.

You make a good point.  Shonda was constantly complaining about how she had to continuously tell the casting department to send actors of every ethnicity in for auditions.  This is something that has to be consciously done, and far too many producers don't seem to care, unless they are typecasting a role.
