Susan and Whoopie Spell it Out, Please Brent
It's World's AIDS Day, but there's some good news that I definitely approve of! A group of gay-positive female celebrities, including Susan Sarandon and Whoopie Goldberg, are filming a series of Public Service Announcements aimed specifically to gay men. But they won't be like any PSAs you've heard before:
The ads, which feature the actresses speaking openly about taboo issues like barebacking and crystal meth, were designed to make gay men feel more comfortable discussing difficult topics with friends and partners. In one of the ads, Goldberg asks viewers: "Do you really think doing crystal meth makes you cool? Meth makes you do dumb stuff — like barebacking. What's cool, is being true to yourself and helping your friends. Love and respect. Now that's cool." In another spot, Peet gently stresses the need for communication in stopping HIV transmissions: "Talking about HIV won't kill the mood, and then you can really get comfortable...You can be carefree without being careless." "Gay men have heard safe sex messages before," acknowledges Carlson. "But they haven't heard them in such a frank yet affirming manner from women they respect and love, as if they are conversing with their own mothers, sisters, or friends." Carlson adds that the campaign is not about HIV education: "These are financed without government funding, so the spots are free to speak specifically to gay men and the realities of their lives. It's a critical message that has been missing from public health campaigns." Cool, huh? I confess, I'm disturbed by what I hear from some segments of the gay community these days: "HIV has been cured, hasn't it?" and "Oh, I'm okay because all of my friends are clean." And apparently some porn producers have decided they care more about making money than they do about the lives of the models they hire and, frankly, the rest of the gay community, which has mimicked what it sees in porn as long as there's been porn.
Obviously, AIDS hasn't been cured, and gay men still make up the majority of new infections. We're also far likelier to become infected than any given straight person, since our community is so much smaller and between 10 and 50% of us already have it (depending on which city you live in).
This is still a deadly disease, but it's such an easily preventable one. And as they say in the old NBC PSAs, the more you know, the better off you are.

This is really good, what these women are doing, and it just shows again who our real friends are in the celebrity community.
However, I disagree with the idea that porn people have any responsibility in whether or not they have safe sex in their movies. I personally think that a lot of the recent bareback videos, aside from maybe some Sean Storm stuff, are pretty terrible (casting, production, the sex, all that). But I've seen other older porn films that don't have condoms and the truth is that I think they're a lot better than many porn films with condoms.
That doesn't mean I have unsafe sex, or ever plan to do so. I think a lot of people can watch this type of stuff and realize it's just a fantasy.
The big reason, in my opinion, for the increase in unsafe sex is crystal meth. When people take meth they don't have the capacity to understand what they're doing.

Don't know if you've heard this one yet, but one of my old friends used to tell me (after I would express shock at his having sex without a condom), "It's all right! He was really small so it's fine."
Uh. Yeah. That's believeable. I heard this so many times from him; it seemed that my efforts of persuasion to keep him safe were just preaching to the choir.

Jon, I disagree with you about the responsibility porn producers bear for making movies without condoms. Who knows who is watching those things and thinking that if the actors are using condoms then I don't need to either. It's shocking how impressionable people can be. We have to everything we can to stop the rise. That being said, I agree with you about crystal meth.
And Wapiko, some folks are just idiots.

Guys, guys its' not about movies its' about you and useing your brains , two hiv bugs can collide and make another more killing bug... Get your heads out-of-your- a**es(and other things )and do right , no protection no sex..I really did not know there are so many stupid homos out there, and dont' say I'm homophobic as Iam a homo...
Regarding porn, there are two issues: the models involved, who are paid to do something really, really dangerous and stupid, for others "entertainment." I find this reprehensible, especially when the people involved are obviously young and/or desperate.
As to the "role model effect," well, I think it's true. People do what they see. Unsafe videos, especially the ones that obviously deliberately eroticize the act, encourage others to do the same. Obviously not for EVERYONE. But statistically: overall, I mean.
I think it's pretty simple: some things are more important that just getting off. Life keeping ourselves a live, and keeping our young people from doing things that they will DEFINITELY regret when they're a little older, a little less horny, and little less stupid.
We're all in this together whether we like it or not. I wish more of us would see it that way.
If these men are that desperate, then they're going to end up doing something much worse than making a porn movie. And there are young actors who do condom porn and then escort bareback, so we could say that condom porn also enables their desperation. Personally I think that these models are old enough to be able to make their own choices and live with the consequences.
I wish that someone could do a study on whether or not gay men are more likely to have unsafe sex if they watch bareback porn. Personally I believe that watching these movies actually may difuse some of the fantasies that some people have about barebacking. If they see it on the screen they may be satisfied for a while with using rubbers in their own lives.
All I can say (as a former psychologist with a master degree and everything) is that this KIND OF thing has been studied extensively, and it's exactly the kind of role-modeling behavior that leads to other high risk behavior. It's further complicated by the sexual element, how the unsafe act itself is being eroticized, made to seem especially exciting, by the porn.
I would also add that the research that I remember about unsafe sex among gay men, it was all about men underestimating their own risk. Which makes sense. No one would do anything that they think would kill them. So many gay men rationalize, and one big way they do that is look at the people around them also having unsafe sex and think, "Well, if it was that bad, these other people wouldn't be doing it either." I think porn makes that thinking easier, even if the thought itself is completely irrational.
