What would you do? Do you have good instincts? ABC will be airing a 5 part Primetime special, Basic Instincts, beginning Wednesday, December 6 at 10 PM EST. Basic Instincts will be examining and testing people's innate decision-making process. The limited series looks at everyday problems from weight loss to examining how small the world is, how closely connected we all are, what people are willing to do simply because someone in authority tells them to. The five-part series will feature reports from John Quinones, Jay Schadler and Chris Cuomo, and finds that what people say they would do in a given situation is quite different than what they actually do.
In the first episode, they will use a hidden camera segment called What Would You Do? The cameras will capture peoples reactions when confronted with dilemmas compelling them to either act or mind their own business, intervene or walk on by. One of these segments is described thusly:
"How will passengers react when a taxi driver uses hateful anti-gay slurs.... Will they tell him to stop, keep quiet, or maybe even join in? Recent attention to some celebrities hate-filled tirades has been a hot topic, but what these passengers openly say about gays in America may be even more shocking, including a man who suggests that gays should be put down. Yet three female friends are so outraged by the driver's hateful tirade that they pretend to be gay to put him in his place."

Finally, something besides those dumb, insulting game shows.
I'm going to watch this. I'm not surprised someone would say that. Eleanor Clift wrote an article about anti-gay campaigns for Newseek.com a couple days ago. Since then several people have wrote in saying they wish gay people were rounded up and put in consentration camps while others said gay people should be killed.
How ironic that ABC is airing this, considering their shows like Desperate Housewives (which presents homosexuality as something only a "bad" person like Andrew does, and then when he becomes "good", suddenly he no longer mentions being gay), or when they canceled a reality show because the end had a conservative Christian man becoming accepting of gay rights, or their unforgiveable 20/20 piece which dismissed Matthew Shepherd's murder as a drug deal gone bad and gave a fawning interview with his murderers.
I can't imagine any network airing a special where a passenger said that women, blacks or Jewish people or Latinos should be put down.
When ideas like this are put out there on national television, they are more likely to gain traction.
