"Star Trek" fanboys react to "gay" episode by setting phasers to "whine"

Peter Kirk
: Can you believe how many straight boys we're freaking out just by kissing!
Alex Freeman: I know! What a bunch of Romulan weenies!

Last week we wrote about the Star Trek: Next Generation episode "Blood and Fire" just released by the fan site Phase II that injected a desperately needed dose of queer into the Trek universe.

Curious how the episode was playing amongst the teeming hordes of straight Trek fans, I beamed over to TrekMovie.com and found a review of the episode posted on that site. Then I read the comments. Dear, dear, dear — talk about troubles with Tribbles.

Here are some of the comments.

Special Commentary: Barack Obama, Rick Warren and our supposed straight allies

When Proposition 8 passed I was initially dismayed beyond belief. If we couldn't keep same-sex marriage in California, then where we going to go from here? Then the LGBT community started to react with marches, candlelight vigils, impassioned speeches and blog posts, and in seeing this renewed political action I realized we were living through a historical moment when gay folks were truly galvanized, fed up and not going to take it anymore.

Call it our Norma Rae moment of 2008.

Further evidence of that outrage and activism has been evidenced by the gay community's reaction to President-elect Barack Obama's choice of homophobic Pastor Rick Warren to lead the invocation at Obama's Swearing-in Ceremony next month. Many of us were mad as hell and none-too-shy about saying so.

What I didn't know was how our reaction was going over in the straight community, specifically within our allies on the left. At least I didn't until I stumbled across our own Christie Keith's diary on Daily Kos. When I spotted it yesterday, the post had already drawn over 700 comments and was the top recommended diary on the site. It's still one of the most recommended and has over 1700 comments.

Christie's diary, titled "It's not Obama I'm mad at; it's way too many of you", is as impassioned and eloquent an explanation for our supposed allies of what the gay community is feeling now as I've ever read. And she takes those "allies" to task for not getting what are our struggle is truly about.

No, the people I'm mad at are some of YOU. I'm angry at your ignorance of our lives, for your complete lack of understanding of what a claim for equality under the law is, for telling us to shut up or quiet down or stop being angry or stop making trouble for the progressive movement or stop drawing negative attention to our party or Obama.

You go, girl! With Christie's permission, I'm reposting her entire diary as I think it's required reading. It's lengthy and not normally the sort of thing we do here at AfterElton.com, but I think you'll find it well worth your time.

Barack Obama/Rick Warren Update: Barney Frank issues a statement, Rachel Maddow discusses and more!

Fallout from President-elect Barack Obama's decision to have Pastor Rick Warren deliver the invocation at Obama's inauguration next month continued this week with the story getting a great deal of ink from the traditional press. Earlier in the week, Obama issued a statement regarding his choice while yesterday MSNBC's Rachel Maddow weighed in and out Congressman Barney Frank issued a statement.

Obama picks bigot and Prop 8 supporter to deliver inaugural invocation

Earlier today we posted about the movement to get President-elect Obama to choose Mark Doty to deliver a poem during his inauguration next month. Alas, that honor went to someone else and now comes word that Obama has chosen the Reverend Rick Warren (pictured above) to deliver the invocation during the inauguration.

Unfortunately, it's not a choice many gay folks are going to be happy about for good reason.

"Battlestar Galactica" rumor confirmed: Yep, someone is gay!

The blogosphere has been abuzz for several weeks now with news the Battlestar Galactica was going to finally add a gay male character (or two) when the show debuts their new "The Face of the Enemy" webisodes starting this Friday.

Well, I just watched the first two webisodes and I can confirm the speculation is true. Find out who is gay and what happens with them after the jump. But only click through if you don't want to be spoiled about the reveal or the two webisodes!

Sci Fi Channel playing it very coy with potential gay storyline on "Battlestar Galactica".

Lt. Felix Gaeta (Alessandro Juliani) and Lt. Hoshi (Brad Dryborough)

WARNING: This post contains minor spoilers about upcoming Battlestar Galactica webisodes.

Last week we reported on rumors that the upcoming Battlestar Galactica webisodes (which start streaming on December 12th) were finally going to add some gay male content to the show. The Sci Fi Channel is still refusing to say whether that is true or not, but the network's Sci Fi Wire blog did post the above screencap from one of the webisodes today.

Sunday night's "Desperate Housewives" featured a surprise gay reveal!

Todd Grinnell

Regular readers might recollect that several week's ago in my BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER! I mentioned that Desperate Housewives had cast Todd Grinnell in the part of a gay plastic surgeon. Well, on last night's episode, a twist at the end revealed just how Todd's character was going to fit into the show. Find out how and watch the clip after the jump! Warning: It's a spoiler!

IMHO "Kath & Kim" episode 109: “Gay” or "Is this really the best Max Greenfield can do?"

Thursday night's episode of NBC's Kath & Kim was the show's 'gay' episode titled appropriately, if simplistically, "Gay". (All the episode titles are one word.)  I've attempted to watch the sitcom before, but failed after becoming violently ill each time. However, I managed to sit through all of last night's thirty minutes so I feel confident in unequivocally giving it a down arrow.

"Time Magazine" goes from the 'Gay Mafia' to the 'Gay Enemies List'

What's up with Time Magazine and gay issues? Last month, they published the latest negative screed by out journalist John Cloud, an article about the "Gay Mafia", and this week the magazine is back with a piece by Alison Stateman titled "What Happens If You're on the Gay 'Enemies List'".

O-o-o-hhh. Sounds ominous, doesn't it? Like maybe we're going to "whack" our enemies Tony Soprano-style. Because if there is any group that has the power and backbone to intimidate folks into doing what we want, it's the gay community.

Yeah, right. Find out what it really means after the jump!

IMHO "Brothers & Sisters" Episode 308: “Going Once ... Going Twice” or Dinner and a show!

Last night's episode of Brothers & Sisters was probably the gayest of the season thus far and not only gave us plenty of Kevin and Scotty, but two Kevin and Scotty kisses. And that's only part of the reason I'm giving this week's episode an IMHO arrow up!
