Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (November 14, 2008)

DON'T HOLD BACK. TELL US HOW YOU REALLY FEEL!
When we launched our redesigned BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER! column last week, I was prepared for some negative feedback. Change is hard after all. But I wasn't quite prepared for the nearly universal outpouring of dislike and criticism. I almost felt like my name had been changed to Proposition 8.

On the plus side, at least this week I had absolutely no trouble coming up with the column's first headline, above. In fact, I had so many to choose from, I was almost paralyzed picking just one. Here are the ones I considered, but ultimately passed on.

AND YOU THOUGHT NEW COKE BOMBED

ANSWER: WHAT ARE THE HINDENBURG, THE TITANIC, AND SARAH PALIN
QUESTION: NAME THREE THINGS THAT WENT OVER BETTER THAN THE NEW BGWE

MICHAEL, THE TRIBE HAS SPOKEN

UNCLE! UNCLE!

YOU HATED IT! YOU REALLY, REALLY HATED IT!

After carefully considering all the comments, I calculated the vote to be 92% against the new column, 8% for. However, like any losing politician in a close contest, I have demanded a recount which the Flying Monkeys have just completed. And here are the results. Ha! I was right — that first figure was wrong! Actually, 96% of you hated the new format. Seriously, there were 25 comments against and one for. Sorry, Nukely!

Sigh....

What exactly did folks have to say? Here are some samples:

From poof: Giving the new BGWE a down arrow...sorry... don't like it either. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

From Javi: I miss the up and down arrows, snarky commentary, and new tidbits. It's just not the same...it's the New Coke/Classic Coke wars all over again....please don't make us drink it

From Defft: Hate to say it, but if the new format remains, I will probably stop reading it.

From mmmexperimental: BGWE - Down Arrow! (Special kudos to mmmexperimental for actually taking my own down arrow and posting it!)

From dr__hf: This is madness! If I wanted TMZ, I'd be on their site. Of course I love AE's titillating snippets of gay and gay-interest gossip, but those are just the tasty appetisers.

There is a silver-lining to all of this — at least now I know how much everyone likes this column. (Cue this week's comments of people chiming in saying, "Oh, no — I hate them both equally.)

So what is an editor to do, except after careful consideration, decide to return BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER! to its original format. So please — no more surprises like this!
