Ask the Flying Monkey! (April 28, 2008)

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey!

Q: The Sex and the City movie: yea or nay? Gregory, Dallas, TX

A: Truthfully? Some small part of the Flying Monkey is hoping for a Glitter-like debacle. The Monkey loved Sex and the City as a TV show and will definitely see the movie. But the show was basically flawless — one of very, very few that never “jumped the shark” (except maybe in the finale; having Carrie end up with Big, after passionately deciding, like, six times over the course of the series that he wasn’t right for her just felt waaaaay too tacked-on-happy-ending to me).

Anyway, why mess with perfection? To me, the movie has a “let’s remake Casablanca!” feel to it. The Beatles never reunited for a reason—they knew there was no way they could have lived up to the expectation. And it was a very, very good call.

Speaking of which, did anyone catch how incredibly bitter George Lucas is in the recent issue of EW? Check out his answer to the first question. Seems that someone holds a serious grudge that everyone over the age of four hated the Star Wars prequels!

On one hand, I agree with his point—see my answer to the Sex and the City question, above. On the other hand, after making two and a half of the greatest movies of all time (the original Star Wars movies, minus the Ewoks in Jedi), he then made three of the mind-bogglingly crappiest. Sorry, George, a lot of the anger you received was justified and genuine, not just inevitable griping. You pissed on your Mona Lisa.

Q: Will Luke MacFarlane’s status on Brothers & Sisters ever be changed from “guest star” to “regular player” (or whatever the term is) and listed along with the other in-laws? And when does the story arc begin that will end in the union ceremony? DG, Chicago, Illinois

Luke MacFarlane

A: Good news, DG! According to the recent profile of MacFarlane in Canada’s Globe and Mail in which the actor also came out, Luke confirmed that he is now an official series regular! According to ABC, he’ll be listed as such either at the very end of this one or at the start of next season.

The storyline has already started and the wedding will take place on May 11th.
